YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

17-21st MAY

Year 10 students completed work experience from 17-21st May which is an integral part of the curriculum. Feedback received from students, teachers, parents and employers was very positive. Many students were able to explore possible future pathways and secured part-time work and some were offered the possibility of an apprenticeship when they finish school.

Students have also gained a better understanding of the requirements of employers and the workforce and have returned to school with renewed enthusiasm and motivation.

Work experience positions covered a broad spectrum of job areas including: hospitality, retail, childcare, photography, aviation, teaching, sport and fitness and various trade areas.

We were very impressed with the manner in which students conducted themselves in the workplace and they should be congratulated on their fine achievements.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members of Greensborough College who visited and contacted students on work experience. The dedication shown by staff is an important factor in ensuring that the work experience program is a successful and worthwhile experience for all students involved.

Thank you to everyone who supported the work experience program.

Refrigeration

Throughout work experience, some of the daily activities I observed and assisted in were replacing a new compressor unit, replacing a cool room doorframe and wiring on a plug and piping. I enjoyed work experience as it was related to my interests and I now know what refrigeration covers and whether I want to pursue it as a career.

Naturally Music

Naturally Music is a Performing Arts Studio where I usually go for singing competitions and singing lessons. I decided to complete my work experience here because I have a real passion for singing, music and children. On the Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, I was able to teach Ready Set Dance and Ready Set Ballet with pre-schoolers which I absolutely loved. We also had to choose and buy costumes for an upcoming concert, which was lots of fun.

I was never bored, I was always entertained during my work experience in and outside of the studio. I learnt many things about my passion and where I see myself in a few years. I was also offered a part time job to teach the kids towards the end of the year, which I am very excited about and I definitely would have liked to complete two weeks of work experience, not just one!

Photography

I worked with a photographer for my work experience week. For two of the five days I did newborn and family photos. I would help set up the backdrops and also keep the babies calm when they would get restless. Each newborn session would take about 2 hours. I also completed lots of administration such as filing and mailing. On the other three days I did first birthday cake smashes where I would help set up the themes for the cake smashes, then I would move the babies into different positions for the photos. Once the cake photos were done we did the bath shots, so I would help to clean the babies up and the mess we had made. Other times I would help make the props for other cake smashes. I loved doing this for work experience and wouldn’t have wanted to do anything else. I felt very welcomed. This opportunity made me more interested in photography and I would love to look into photography as a future career.

Whittlesea Library

My time at work experience was great. I had many things to do such as shelving (putting books in the right category), returning (scanning books and putting them in trolleys to be shelved), helping out the people at the library and I even found out where the library chute leads! The people there said I worked hard and was quick to complete my tasks, so they asked me to create a library display of all my favourite books and items. I had lots of fun and learnt many things from my week of work experience.

I'd be glad to do it again!

Aviation

I completed my work experience at Avionics 2000, an Aircraft Maintenance Hangar at Essendon Fields Airport. My daily activities consisted of many different things such as observing and helping with building parts, cleaning parts and repairing the aircraft engine and airframe. I really enjoyed work experience because it was something different and a really good experience. I was able to work on all different types of aircraft and helicopters which was fun. Work experience really helped me to decide what I wanted to do in the future, because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.
