From the Principal
Benvenuto - Welcome
As our Year 9 students went out to winter sports at various locations across Shepparton on Thursday, they were reminded of our college expectations and how these apply both in school and when out in the community – they are reasonable expectations for life. It was so pleasing to get some really positive feedback in regards to the behaviour of our students whilst representing the college at each event. They displayed all of the behaviours you would expect of a good sportsperson. It is a great reminder for us to continue to strive towards meeting these simple, but powerful expectations in all aspects of our lives.
I encourage families to use the explicit language to respect everyone and everything, help others succeed and do your best whilst at home to reinforce the college expectations. Let us celebrate the moments when our children meet these expectations. Whilst celebrating the moments our children are displaying the college expectations, even more importantly we, as adults, need to be modelling what it looks like for them. In relation to the expectation of respecting everyone and everything, recently it has been brought to my attention that there are some challenges for local residents at drop-off and pick-up times. Can we please respect everyone and everything by being mindful of where and how we park when coming to collect our children? I went out for a look at pick-up time today and Wendouree Drive and Malmsbury Cres seem to be the two key areas parents are parking to drop off and pick up. Please be mindful of the local residents and their properties as you do so.
Next week is National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3). This year’s theme is Reconciliation takes action. National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The reason that this particular week is chosen is that it aligns to two significant milestones in the journey towards reconciliation; the 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. Just prior to National Reconciliation Week, we celebrate National Sorry Day on May 26. This is a day to commemorate the National Apology and we pause to remember and acknowledge the Stolen Generations and the impacts of those policies that caused such pain and suffering to individuals, families and communities over so many generations. Please see the General Notices page of this edition of il giornale for more information about the Sorry Day commemoration that is happening in Shepparton. The joy of new life! On Tuesday of this week, our Grounds and Facilities Caretaker Michael Sorbello became a nonno for the first time. His son and daughter-in-law welcomed their beautiful little girl, Abigail, into the world. We congratulate the Sorbello family, including Year 8 Learning Mentor Olivia who has become a zia for the first time, as they experience the joy and excitement of the arrival of a new family member.
