Cross country success for St Anne's

Thirty-six students from Years 7, 8 and 9 attended the GMSSSA cross country at Princess Park recently and, despite our small school size, there was a great deal of success. By the end of the day, four of our runners had achieved individual placings: Jayden Pert 3rd 14-year-old boys; Lila Guthrie 3rd 15-year-old girls; Andre Renato 3rd 15-year-old boys and Tom Nalder 2nd 12/13-year-old boys, and 16 other students had qualified to run at the Division finals on June 15 at Winton.  A further pleasant surprise was the news that St Anne's College placed 2nd in both the Boys Aggregate and Girls Aggregate and was the winner of the Points Average Shield.  Congratulations to all of our competitors!

St Anne's represented well in winter sports

Around 45 of our Year 9 students participated in three sports at yesterday's Winter Sports Day.  Our teams competed against other secondary schools from the district in basketball, netball and soccer and although none progressed through to the next round it was enjoyable to be back out competing again after the frustrations of 2020 due the COVID pandemic.  Year 7 and 8 students have their turn next Thursday, May 27.

Being their best on the basketball court

On Thursday, May 20 a group of Year 9 basketballers headed to the Shepparton Stadium to represent St Anne’s College in the Goulburn Murray Division Winter Sports. We had 14 students go along to make up one intermediate boys team and one intermediate girls team.

The boys played three games, winning their first against Shepparton Christian College 22-5, losing the second to Notre Dame College A 9-39, and winning their third against Greater Shepparton Secondary College B 19-6. Unfortunately we did not make the finals for the boys, but everybody played their best!

The girls lost their three round-robin games: 18-5 (NDC B), 38-9 (NDC A), and 15-13 (GSSC). They still proceeded to the finals as there were only four teams.

The girls came together and played a fantastic semi-final game, with a free throw to draw the game 10-all at the buzzer of regular time. The two-minute overtime saw the team bring out their best, with a three-pointer to secure a spot in the final! What a thrilling match!

Although our girls gave it their all, we were ultimately defeated by NDC A in the grand final. It was an excellent day for all involved. Well done Year 9s!

Second block of after-school soccer starts

The second four-week block of the Sporting Schools Active After-School Skillzone soccer sessions kicked off today for 20 participants from the School of Wonder. Sporting Schools is a $280 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children's participation in sport and connect them with community sport opportunities.

Urgent call for Sports Association members

St Anne's College requires community members to join St Anne's College Sports Association to support the students' participation in sporting competitions. Without support from families, there is the potential that the college may not be able to enter sporting teams into local competitions in the future. The college is growing and as such more people are needed to assist with organising sporting teams and fundraising for the Sports Association, so that sports uniforms and equipment can be purchased.

The association will also oversee sub-committees for soccer and netball, and other sports if there is enough interest. Association members would be required to meet once a term, with the occasional extra meeting if necessary.

St Anne's College Sports Association is seeking people for the following positions:

Chair

Deputy Chair

Treasurer

Secretary

General members

People interested in any of the above positions are asked to please email St Anne's College Community Engagement Officer Mardie Guppy at mguppy@sackialla.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible.
