9 & 10

Ms. Julie Ryan

It has been a busy fortnight with our Naplan testing finalised for year 7 and 9. Naplan provides important information about students progression over time and allows the college to provide additional supports for students who need dedicated interventions to improve numeracy and literacy through our BOOST program, Numeracy support and tutor program.

Our year 9s will have their first formal exam period this year with an English exam and a Maths exam. The timetable is on Compass. The year 9 English and EAL exam will be 1.5 hours in length period 3 and 4 on Tuesday 1st of June. The year 9 Maths exam is periods 3 and 4 on Wednesday the 2nd of June. Students will attend all regularly scheduled classes before and after the exams.

Prior to their exams, year 9 students will also be completing their Morrisby testing which the college provides to the students to discover what their inherent abilities and interests are in terms of their potential career pathways. Students get a further follow up 30 minute appointment to discuss their findings.

Year 10 students have 4 exams. English, Humanities, Science and Maths. These are scheduled periods 1 and 2 starting Monday 31st May and finishing on the Thursday 3rd June. Students are able to return home at the conclusion of their exam EXCEPT if they have a Unit 1 subject which they will need to attend as usual. These students will be able to study in the library.

This is the first opportunity that our current year 10 students have to practise the important skill of examination preparedness, examination conditions and then to reflect upon their results after receiving feedback from their teacher.  The final assessment for all VCE students is based on external VCE exams run by VCAA, so the more actively students embrace this exam period, the more success they will experience both now and into the future.

We had an assembly with the Year 10 students that outlined work experience updates and still many students have not secured a placement for themselves. This is a vital part of their transition from Year 10 and into their senior school pathways. Students must actively research a placement that will be beneficial to them and guide them in their upcoming subject selections which will be taking place next term. To assist students in this process the college ran a Year 10 and 11 Careers expo at the college on Thursday 20th of May. Students were able to see a range of professions represented and could ask some invaluable questions about future pathways.
