YEAR 9 & 10 ELECTIVE SUBJECT SELECTION

Elective choice forms for Semester 1, 2023 will be made available via Operoo from 8pm tonight, Thursday, 6th October.

Subject allocation takes into consideration a number of factors, including class size, previous subjects, and the order at which forms are returned. Students are encouraged to try a range of different electives throughout Year 9 and 10.

The Operoo eForm will need to be completed by parents/carers, along with their child, by NO LATER THAN Monday, 10 October. Keeping in mind, the earlier that the form is completed, the better.

If either students or parents have any more queries about the electives or the process involved in selection, they are encouraged to contact us at school to speak to the relevant subject teachers, or the Year 9 and 10 Team Leaders.

2023 FEE SCHEDULE

Due to the pandemic, over the past two years the cost of camps has not been included in the fee schedule but have been billed to families separately and in addition to their school fees.

In 2023 the cost of all year level camps, together with excursions, sporting events and any other outings, have been included in the Resource & Activities levy so that the annual fee invoice will be inclusive of all costs for the year (with the exception for any interstate or overseas trips).

For families who are struggling financially, BHCS may be able offer assistance through our Fee Assistance Program. Should you require such assistance, please contact schoolfees@bhcs.vic.edu.au to request an application form (please note that there is an application process and conditions apply).

MEDICATION DISTRIBUTION REVIEW

In May, we sent home a Medication Distribution Survey asking for parent/carer input as we reviewed our Medication Distribution Policies and Procedures. We want to thank those who participated in this survey.

From the responses that we received, we have made the following change to our Medication Distribution Policy:

Paracetamol & Ibuprofen We will continue to administer Paracetamol and Ibuprofen to students from Prep to Year 12 with parents/carers consent. We will move to obtaining this consent on an annual basis to give families the opportunity to update this information as circumstances change.

This medication will only be administered as per the dosage directions on the box. Where permission has not been granted by the parents/carers, or the attending First Aid Officer is unable to determine if the child has already received a dose of that medications, parents/carers will be contacted before administering the medication.

Antihistamines

We will no longer be administering antihistamines to students from Prep to Year 6 and will only administer these to students in Years 7 to 12. This decision has been made due to the varying types of antihistamines, and different antihistamines remaining active within the body over varying periods of time. For this reason, there is an increased risk of double dosing, particularly in students of a younger age who are unable to articulate what medications have already been given to them.

The consent for antihistamines for students in Year 7-12 will be obtained on an annual basis, to allow parents/carers to change their preferences as students move into, and through, these year levels. Families with children in Prep to Year 6 who believe their children need antihistamines will be required to complete the relevant Medication Authorisation Form as per prescription medications. Families with students in Prep to Year 6 who have completed the necessary authorisation forms will still be contacted by the First Aid Officers prior to administering this medication.

Antihistamines will only be administered as per the dosage directions on the box. Where permission has not been granted by the parents/carers (Year 7-12 only), or in situations where the attending First Aid Officer is unable to determine if a child has already received a dose of that medication, parents/carers will be contacted before administering the medication.

Changes to take effect

You may already be aware that the administering of antihistamines for Prep to Year 6 students was halted during the review process. This change will now become permanent. We believe, however, based on survey feedback, that the impact of this change is minimal, while providing a safer outcome for our students overall.

These changes will not affect the distribution of prescription medications, which are administered as per the Medication Authorisation Form completed by parents/carers, in consultation with the First Aid Department.

These changes will be reflected in the Parent Handbook in due course.
