From the Acting Principal,

Jordan Chamerski

Being in the office over the past two weeks, in Diana Ellis’ absence, I have been very proud of the effort, engagement and energy I’ve seen in the school. It has been terrific to see students learning and what they have been creating has been outstanding. From creative writing to hand sewn pizzas, the high level of work being demonstrated is overwhelming and as we near closer to the end of the school year, I’m looking forward to seeing more tremendous pieces of work.

World Teachers’ Day

The staff at Woodend Primary School are passionate and committed to each and every student at our school. Whether it is working tirelessly to modify lessons to cater to every child’s needs, or beginning the day extra early to setup for a special event, or giving up their own time to provide extra-curricular activities, our teachers are valued.

On Friday 28th of October, we celebrated our teachers who consistently go above and beyond to ensure the students feel safe, supported and grow through their learning. The day was a day to celebrate all the hard work carried out by our teachers. The teachers had a special morning tea on their Professional Practice Day and while that was certainly a highlight, the most meaningful thanks came in the form of handmade cards and words of gratitude from our students and their parents.

Curriculum Day

Our teachers were busy undergoing some learning of their own on Monday 31st of October. We used the time to collaborate on a number of items to help assist for the transition to 2023. Teachers started to design their units of work for next year and had plenty of innovative ideas. Part of the day was spent focusing on where each individual student was in their learning journey and asked the questions:

  • What do we want students to learn?
  • How do we know if they have learned?
  • How do we respond when students do not learn?
  • How do we respond when they have learned?

These four questions guide our planning and teaching to ensure students are being catered for.

Monster Mash Flash Mob

During our assemblies on Friday 28th of October, we saw a surprise flash mob spring into action when Mr Bromley hit 'play'. Students all came together to dance to the spooky but spectacular song, Monster Mash. The unaware teachers sat back and didn’t know whether to sit their students down or join in. Everyone got into the spirit and bopped their way to the beats, and it all made for a memorable experience.

Class Requests

As parents we all want the best for our children. This often means we would like a certain teacher, class structure etc.  Whilst we understand parents would like a certain teacher, friendship groups or class structure, it is simply not viable for every parent in the school to make class requests for their child/children. I am sure you can appreciate this.

If you have a particular concern or valid reason to make a request about the placement of your child based on their academic progress or other pertinent factors, please put your request in writing and send it to Diana Ellis.

Dyslexia Awareness

Ava from SU3, proudly and passionately delivered a speech to the school about dyslexia. She detailed what it was and how it affects her learning, and made everyone aware that plenty of people are living with dyslexia but are just normal people. It was a powerful speech by Ava who had the audience applauding her when she finished. Students walked away with a stronger understanding of dyslexia and a new appreciation for students who persist with their learning difficulties.

Student Art Award - Woodend Art Group

Last weekend, the Woodend Art Group held an art show exhibiting the works of local artists. It was very exciting to see so many of our students exhibiting their artwork. Polly from CU3 was the winner of the Richard Chamerski Encouragement award as judged by local artist Tim Jones for her creative work.
