SunSmart Announcement

As we come into Spring time the UV index rises and the risk of UV exposure and sunburn increase.

To help guard students against excess UV exposure please ensure your child has a well fitting sun hat to bring to school, we recommend a hat with a full brim that protects the child's head, face, ears and the back of the neck. Students can leave their hat at school in their personal tub.

We ask parents to apply sunscreen before coming to school. School staff can reapply sun screen before the lunch break.

Consent for staff to apply sunscreen:

Many families have already returned a sunscreen consent form. If you have not signed a consent form for staff to apply sunscreen to your child, please message your child's teacher via Xuno.  We are working on a digital consent form via Xuno to make the process easier.

Our out door play areas are well shaded and we encourage students to use the shaded area on days with high UV index.

Outside play is an important part of a child's developments:

We need sun exposure to make vitamin D, which is important for bone growth and our immune systems, it also plays an important role in sleep and mood regulation.

When children get outside they get exercise, they have more opportunities to work on their motor skills,  they get to socialise in a fun way and they get to do some controlled risk taking, which is an important part of developing executive functioning.

So, outside play is a very important part of a child's physical, mental, social and psychological growth, and should be encouraged all year round, with some extra precautions when the UV index is 3 or higher.

Below is a link to the UV index monitor from Sunsmart Australia, we encourage parents to check the UV index every day, to help decide if your child needs sun screen applied before coming to school.
