YEAR F -2

It was another exciting week in the F-2 learning space last week. We had our long awaited Circus Performance, our last incursion with Body Safe and many more fun learning experiences throughout the week.

We had a fabulous time on Thursday night performing for our loved ones at our Circus Performance. It was wonderful to finally show our family and friends the new skills we have been practising over the past few months. Some of us were extremely nervous to be getting up on stage in front of such a big audience but we were courageous and resilient as we performed our best tricks. Most of us wanted to go again after we came off stage!

During the last two Fridays, we have engaged in an incursion with Body Safe, where we have learnt about our bodies and the different emotions we experience. In the first session, we identified a range of emotions and the cues our bodies give us when we feel these. We discussed different strategies we can use to handle these strong feelings. In our second session, we identified and discussed our public body parts, private body parts and personal body parts. We also discussed who our trusted adults are when we need someone to go to for help. We made finger puppets of our trusted adults to take home as a reminder. We will continue to unpack this in our learning spaces in the coming weeks.

As mathematicians, those of us in Foundation have just begun sharing an introduction to division by viewing the story “The Doorbell Rang”. We then shared 12 cookies between groups of children. Last week we completed making and drawing groups of, as an introduction to multiplication.

Those of us in 1/2 finished learning about fractions by baking a banana cake, slime and chocolate truffle balls and looking into different ways we can find equivalent fractions using ½ cups, ¼ cups and ⅓ cups to make 1 whole cup. Sebastian showed us that instead of using 1 whole cup we can use ½ cup and 2/4 cup. As mathematicians, we then explored different ways of cutting a round cake and a square cake to show halves, quarters and eighths. Once we cut our cakes we found that four eighths, two quarters and one half are equivalent fractions! This week, we will tune into time, where we will explore the duration of time, and how to tell time to the half hour and quarter hour.

YEAR 3/4

Last Thursday was the culmination of weeks of practice for 3/4 students in learning circus acts to perform on stage.  We have been practising in our class groups since the last term and on Thursday we had our dress rehearsal where the students were able to perform on stage in front of other students and teachers. This was a great learning experience as the students had to learn how to fit into a schedule, to move on and off stage and most importantly where to be in a group during their performance.

On the night itself, the 3/4s were fantastic. They overcame their nerves and fears to put on the best display they could manage. For some students, this was a challenge they had the skills and confidence to achieve. For others, this challenge was quite difficult. All students rose to the challenge.

We can’t wait to see all the crazy socks and pyjamas on Friday 28 October! This a reminder that a gold coin donation would be greatly appreciated to support Mission Week.

Year 3/4 Teachers

YEAR 5/6

Our 5/6 learners have been reflecting and engaging in numerous learning opportunities throughout the week.

As part of literacy, our 5/6 learners have been focusing on various genres and this week we are revisiting and focusing on Narrative writing. Each learner will be given the opportunity to look at various narrative pieces written and look at ways to make their writing piece more engaging for example writing a sizzling start, a dramatic resolution and interesting words that appeal to the audience.  Our learners will have the opportunity to share these adventurous narratives with their peers.

As Mathematicians, our learners will continue focusing on and experimenting with 3D dimensional objects and their properties. Our learners have used their prior knowledge of pyramids and prisms to design various 3D shapes and buildings. An interesting way that our learners engage in learning about 3D dimensional shapes is to provide fun learning opportunities for the children to engage in. Our creative learners will continue to digitally represent their buildings and construct various 3D models using paper.

As inquirers, we have been unpacking our big question How Do We Change? Our learners were given the opportunity to document their first thinking about the big question.  They continued by documenting various wonderings about puberty.  These wonderings will be addressed throughout the unit.

Big question:

How do we change?

Understandings:

We change physically, emotionally and socially as we grow

We learn to manage changing relationships as we grow

We keep ourselves safe and healthy over the span of our lives

This a reminder to all parents that this Wednesday 26th of October “The Wonder of Living” online workshop will take place. This workshop is for both the parent/s and child.  The workshop begins at 7.00 pm. It is important that you attend as this workshop is part of your child’s inquiry learning.

As people of faith, our learners have had the opportunity to unpack the creation story. This story reflects and acknowledges the great works that God created. Our learners activated their prior knowledge to uncover their first thinking about the creation story.   As people of faith, we discussed how and why God created so many wonderful things. We continued by comparing the Indigenous creation story to the Genesis story.

This Friday the 28th of October, as part of mission month we celebrate Socktober. Children are asked to bring a gold coin donation.  The children are to wear their pyjamas or crazy socks to commemorate the day.

Circus performance:

Last Thursday evening our learning community took part in a circus performance.  Our children did an amazing job and we are very proud of them.

On the 20th of October, all the students from St Fidelis participated in a circus performance.  Each class and every year level had its own act to show the crowd and their parents for e.g. my class (5/6CG) did plates and we did balance which was tricky but we tried and we did it.  It was a fantastic experience and I am grateful that I will remember this one terrific night. By Eva Petersen

On Thursday night the children from St Fidelis participated in a circus production.  Each year level had the opportunity to learn a particular dancing routine which they performed for their families. It was very exciting and so much fun to experience a circus production for our school. By Giselle Campisi

Last Friday our Year 5/6 learners were given the opportunity to meet Anthony Cianflone.  Anthony Cianflone is the Victorian Labour Candidate for the Legislative District of Pascoe Vale and Coburg. Our learners discovered that Anthony is from Coburg and has lived in this area all his life.   They also discovered that from an early age he had an interest in politics and that he has worked in Canberra.

On the 21st of October Anthony Cianflone visited St Fidelis.  He told us he was running for the local MP. He continued by telling us what his plan is for our local area if he gets elected. He answered questions from the students such as “What is the first thing you will do if you are elected” “When did you get interested in politics” and more. Luca Sortino

On the 21st of October Anthony Cianflone came to St Fidelis. He told us that he is running for MP of Coburg and Pascoe Vale. He explained how he became interested in politics from an early age.  He told us that he has lived in Coburg all his life and wants to become MP so that he can make changes in our community.  Anthony will work towards making more jobs around the Coburg and Pascoe Vale area. Anthony Falsetta Spina

Thank you all from the 5/6 team
