From the Principal's desk

Scott Diamond, College Principal

Hello to all our community members.

The weekly Facebook Live session online

My page header this week is of the Hendy Campus leaders.

With the exciting announcements that Regional Victoria has moved ahead on the Premiers Roadmap out of COVID19 comes the news that students in Regional schools will return to face to face learning. This is a welcome relief for us all and I can definitely say with great confidence that all staff at NBC simply cannot wait to welcome students back to school.

At Northern Bay, the return to face to face learning will look like this:

Monday October 5 - Thursday October 8

All students Prep - Year 12 completing Remote Learning -

(**All students in Unit 3 / 4 VCE subjects will be required on site to complete the GAT on Wednesday October 7 at the Goldsworthy Campus (The GAT will be held in the newly Goldsworthy Library see below.)

Friday October 9 - Prep - Year 2

students  will return to face to face learning on their home Campus. (All P-8 campuses open)

ALL Other year levels -Year 3 to Year 12 final day of  Remote Learning.

  • During this week of Remote Learning On-site supervision arrangements will remain the same as for this term. this includes Tallis and Wexford Campuses remaining closed until Friday.

Monday October 12 - All students from Year 3 - 12  return to face to face learning

All campuses OPEN

As the Remote Learning period will continue for Week 1 of fourth Term all students who have borrowed an iPad, Laptop or Wireless Internet Device will keep these throughout the holidays and for week 1. The college will communicate further information regarding the return of these devices at that time.

Once again we are all enthusiastically  looking forward to these dates where students return to face to face classes. The college will work hard in the meantime to ensure this return is as smooth as possible for students, families and staff.

End of Year celebrations

The Department of Education & Training (DET) have encouraged all schools across the state to ensure that the important graduation milestones are celebrated. This year has been a very difficult one for all but our thoughts certainly do shift to the students in Year 12 completing their final year of schooling. The college will work hard to ensure that a significant event is held to recognise this major achievement. Northern Bay milestones also extend to our Year 8 students on our P-8 Campus who celebrate, in many cases, the end of 9 years of education on these settings before moving to our senior Campus at Goldsworthy. Details on whether this will be  a face to face event, an online event or a hybrid of the two will be determined in the coming weeks and months. What I can assure is that the staff team at Northern Bay are fully dedicated to making this experience a memorable one for all students and their families. We will be sure to keep all families and students informed of this work.

Three Way Conferences

As we wait to see the regulations given by the DET on visitor protocols we are unsure about adults coming to school - parents, visitors, contractors etc and we have therefore made a decision to use the appointment schedule by Webex which is very familiar to students and hopefully their families

Advice will be sent via compass

Prep Enrolment 2021 and Transition

One of the many examples of operating differently is the transition from Kindergarten to School and how we undertake contact with  families and next year's Prep students.

While we are still being limited with people physically coming to school , families who might normally arrive at the office and get enrollment forms and attend the transition programs has not been possible.

This short video explains what families can do if they have children looking to come to school next year.

School Photos for P-8 Campuses

We are in a very sensitive place in trying to support our families with the annual School Photographs of your child / children.

We have dates scheduled for October 26-29 but of course have no current knowledge if restrictions will still be in place upon visitors coming on campus. We have asked the photo company (who as you can imagine have 6 months of cancellations to try to catch up) for other dates

They have given us late November dates as an alternative and we  have asked for a commitment that packs would be ready for Christmas gifts if that is our only possibility to meet your expectations.

Please stay tuned for final decisions to see if we can go ahead.

Congratulations and appreciations

I read with interest the account by Ty (in the Years 10-12 Update) describing how he felt about sitting the National Maths Test.

Well, since that article was written, we have just learned some of the outcomes.

The results are IN!! Well done to Ty, Aidan  and Bush  for getting Distinctions in the Intermediate Competition! Congratulations also go to Kyan , Jasmine , Iakdeep  and Shar'k Pru  for getting awarded a Credit. Big shout out to  Mohktar for getting the highest score of  Year 9 students.

Congratulations to all of our community members who sought to help and encourage  others  with their focus on RUOK.

Facebook has countless examples of staff and students becoming involved but it is the importation message of caring for others that cannot be forgotten in schools as we acknowledge this day each year.

From that huge range of media I have selected these. Some of the Hendy leaders pictures above made this impressive video.

Young Cedric from Hendy Campus also wanted to give a message to the community

Appreciation to the Australian Business Community Network (ABCN)

Exciting news for students at the Goldsworthy Campus. We received twenty Toshiba Ultrabook computers which we were able to allocate to our students who were identified in recognition of their hard work and effort during Remote and Flexible Learning. The refurbished Ultrabooks were donated through our association with the Australian Business Community Network (ABCN) and one of its network partners, NBN Sydney. The Laptop comes with Microsoft Office and Windows and will support the recipients continuing to engage with their learning pathways.  Congratulations:

to the following students who have been offered a device.

Year 12 Care Packs

I also want to congratulate our secondary school nurses who have sent a small care pack to each of the year 12 students in what is going to be a full on end of the year for them.

In early February we were honoured to have Sir Peter Cosgove, former governor general of Australia address our Year 12. He talked of making this most of this exciting year and embracing the opportunity. At that time it was unimaginable to think of the year that they have had, but we have to acknowledge that so many of them have stood up and taken any opportunity that they could to keep on track and enjoy the year.

This is the message from the nurses.

We were delighted to put together a care pack for the Year 12 students to support them in the coming weeks leading up to their final exams. A beautiful letter from Goldsworthy Campus Principal Ken Massari was included.

We wish the Class of 2020 all the best for their exams and future

A great new look

When Year 9-12 return they will be delighted to see the major renovations that have been done to their Resource Centre.

Using the Local School Community Fund (Federal) we were able to get support for minor improvements across the campuses. At Goldsworthy we re carpeted a very tired learning space before agreeing that there was more to be improved and we approved the use our state government funding to open the Library to the outside with sliding doors. This provides for a teaching and learning space beyond the walls for outside groups or relevant teaching. The end result is sure to impress the students.

A final congratulations to all of community for adapting to unprecedented circumstances to best offer support, stability and care for our students P-12

Regards

Scott
