St Mary’s Parish Prayer

God our Father, as we thank you for the blessings, we ask you to bless this Parish of yours, so that

we may love you more.

Encircle our families with your loving care.

Help parents to be good examples to their

children and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.

To the sick grant health, to the aged bring serenity and to those in sorrow, joy.

May we grow stronger in faith and may

our love for one another become deeper

in our daily living.

We make this through the intercession of our Mother Mary.  Amen

Updated - On the Lighter Side

Three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar…

You can't tell me that's just a coincidence!

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first says, "I'll have a beer." The second says, "I'll have half a beer." The third says, "I'll have a quarter of a beer." And so on. The bartender hands them two glasses of beer and says, "You guys need to know your limits."

New - Feast of the Week - St John Eudes 19 August

John Eudes (born in Normandy, France 14/11/1601 the son of a farmer and died 19/8/1680). Fr Eudes became increasingly aware of the moral distress and exploitation of many girls and women. In 1641, he established a refuge in Caen. It was the beginning of what would become the Order of Our Lady of Charity. Rose Pelletier entered the Order, given the name Mary of St. Euphrasia. And later she founded the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Sr Mary Euphrasia longed that the whole world would benefit from the saving work John Eudes initiated. He was canonised 31/5/1925.

NEW - Quote of the week

"The poet, the painter, the artist are always in touch with this transcendent Mystery ‑ insofar as they are authentic poets ‑ however much they may be enclosed in the world of the senses and the imagination. Poetry and mysticism derive from a common source." Bede Griffiths.

New - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In this week's Gospel, we move on from Peter's resounding proclamation of Jesus as the Christ  toward the suffering and sacrifice Jesus will face.

Jesus lays out a prescription for those that would  follow him – to take up one's own cross and to lose one's life in order to find it. 'This is the path that    Jesus must go and the path that all who would seek association with him must also be prepared to embrace.'

Discernment is a matter of careful    listening. As we go about our tasks this week let us pray for the courage and     wisdom to enable   discernment.

 Many blessings from MONS PETER

NEW - Looking at the Readings

Remember the conundrum: “What happens when an irresistible force hits an immoveable object”. It cannot happen. The response is that the two terms are mutually exclusive. It is correct in the physical sense but what about in the spiritual sense? The irresistible force of God “hits” the stubbornness and refusal of the Prophet Jeremiah. We hear in today’s first reading that Jeremiah felt “a fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones”. Of course the refusal and stubbornness of Jeremiah was not absolute, the analogy weakens, and he must continue being the Prophet of the Lord God despite great opposition by the leaders and the people.

Jesus faces a similar dilemma. The leaders and the crowd will turn against him, he will suffer and die (Matt16:21). Again we see a similar problematic involvement between the natural or physical life and the supernatural or divine life. Peter does not see the issue or its resolution.

He takes a risk, which not uncommon for him, and as the student and the follower he takes his Teacher and Leader aside to “rebuke Him”. Have we done that in the classroom or in places of worship? Are citizens allowed to rebuke leaders in courtrooms and parliaments? Peter did and quickly was confronted with a challenging truth: God’s way are not man’s ways. Jesus added to the apparent conundrum: “For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it” (16:25).

Like Jeremiah and Peter we take on God’ life and Jesus’ ministry with their crosses and contradictions for there is a fire burning within us when we hear the words of everlasting life like those on the road to Emmaus.
