Year 4 Excursions - Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre

Either Friday 4 or  Monday 7 August

On Friday 4 August, 4K will be visiting the Marine Discovery Centre in Woodbridge as part of their inquiry into Sharing the Planet. The following Monday, 7 August, 4OA will also be visiting the Centre. Both classes will be inquiring into marine ecosystems and the excursion will introduce students to the variety of marine organisms found in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. We will travel by bus to Woodbridge, leaving school at 9.10am, returning by 3.00 pm. Students will need to wear their sports uniform. They should also bring morning tea and lunch, a water bottle and any required personal medication e.g. epipens or asthma puffers.

We welcome any Year 4 parent helpers from 10.00am, but the Marine Discovery Centre stipulates that visiting parents must hold a current ‘Working with Children/Vulnerable People’ card. Note that for all Friends’ School volunteer activities you will also need to complete a Volunteer Registration Form. Please contact Emily if you are able to join the 4K excursion on Friday 4 August ekeeling@friends.tas.edu.au. Please contact Katie or Denise if you are able to join the 4OA class on Monday 7 August: korourke@friends.tas.edu.audarmstro@friends.tas.edu.au.

Kindergarten Earthcare Days Term 3 - Lenah Valley

The Kindergarten children will be visiting a site near the Lenah Valley Linear Park for their Earthcare Days in Term 3. We will be going in the afternoon on Mondays from Weeks 2 - 6 and will be leaving school on a bus at 11.45am and will return by 2.45pm. The only exception to this is the Monday 31 July Earthcare Day, when we will be leaving at 11.00am and returning at 1.30pm.

The excursions are part of our Sharing the planet unit of inquiry. We are aiming to develop responsibility and resilience in a natural environment. Please ensure that your child has a rubbish free lunch at Kindergarten, especially on Mondays to help practise Earthcare and awareness about the impacts of soft plastic on our natural environment. Your child will need appropriate warm clothing for the forecasted weather and spare clothing packed for the excursions as we will be playing outdoors even when it is raining. The school has wet weather jackets and overpants that the children will wear if necessary, depending on the weather. You can also support them by encouraging them to carry their own bags to and from school since they will be doing this on our Earthcare days. We are looking forward to seeing how their natural curiosity and wonder is expressed while we are there.

Please contact the Kindergarten team if you have any questions.

Morris Reading Event - Tasmanian Premier’s Reading Challenge

At Friends’, we strive to foster a lifelong love of reading! With personal choice and a relaxed environment, reading for information and for pleasure is enjoyable, and has ongoing benefits for our students’ emotional, social, academic and physical wellbeing!

To encourage our students to read more, Prep - Year 6 are joining in the Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC), which starts this week and runs until Friday 1 September. At Friends’, our PRC focus is on time spent reading and making it enjoyable rather than the number of books read. Our students are asked to set a Twenties Goal for the 10 weeks of the Reading Challenge. A "Twenty" is one 20 minute reading session, and “reading” includes listening to others read, shared reading and time spent enjoying illustrations.

You can find an overview for parents here and our PRC student site is here. Students will be given a booklet and bookmark this week, but they can also choose a different method of recording their Twenties. If you wish you had more time to read, we encourage you to join in and do the challenge too. The google site has handy hints to help you along! Thank you for all you do to foster your child’s love of reading at home and at school. Please feel free to get in touch with us at any time, Sharon Ryan and Catherine Duffett Morris Teacher-Librarians.
