Principal's Welcome
Carmela D'Amato
Dear Families,
How glorious has the weather been over the last two weeks and especially this week! Hopefully families have been able to enjoy the Women’s FIFA world cup during this time! The atmosphere in Melbourne has been electric.
Our Emerging leaders, Ms Ravanello and Mrs Belanti have also been enjoying some amazing experiences while on their pilgrimage in Rome and Lisbon. They now find themselves in Lisbon ready for the official World Youth Day celebrations. We have been adding some of their experiences on our Instagram and Facebook accounts and we are enjoying sharing this experience with them. If you haven’t seen it yet, they were both so fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend an hour with Pope Francis, being able to ask questions and let him know how we tackle issues of faith, justice and prayer. We send lots of prayers their way.
As a staff we are continuing to work on our ‘Assessment and Reporting’ structures here at School of the Good Shepherd, in particular strengthening the communication that takes place between teachers and families when it comes to their child. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year, I have worked with some parents who had a lot of input into how our formal written reports are currently presented and how these measure up against the reporting guidelines. We will start to filter out information on how our new reporting system will look over the next few weeks. As always, if you have any concerns with your child’s learning, please send your classroom teacher an email to discuss.
Our students have had more opportunities to attend excursions with the preps attending an excursion to Como House and Gardens in South Yarra. This term the prep students are inquiring into the big question: How does the past make us who we are? Como Historic House and Garden is one of the last surviving 19th Century grand houses of Melbourne. Students compared the life of 19th Century children and families to their own experiences on a tour of the house where the lives of 19th Century children are brought to life.
Our Year 6 students are learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation throughout this term and have been preparing to celebrate this sacrament. To further support their preparation, the Year 6 students participated in a Confirmation Reflection Day workshop at Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre in East Melbourne. During the workshop, students explored the life of Mary MacKillop and the wonderful connection she had as a pioneer of our Catholic Faith. I know that the students and staff enjoyed this day immensely and we pray for those students receiving this Sacrament on the 19th August. We also pray for those students who have already received this Sacrament but have also been learning about the Catholic connection to confirmation.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Congratulations to Ms Jemma McVeigh and her partner Jack who are ENGAGED! We are so excited for them and wish them all the very best as they plan for their wedding.
REMINDER BURNLEIGH DVE
Many parents have been doing U TURNS at the front of the school entrance, interrupting traffic flow and potentially putting children in harm’s way. Many of our neighbours have also complained about parents doing u turns in their driveways or even parking in or across their driveways. Please refrain from doing u turns around the school drop off comes or neighbouring houses.
We hope you all have an amazing fortnight ahead!
