Year 6 Report

Faith Life Inquiry

Our focus in Faith Life Inquiry has been Australian History. We have explored different aspects of our Australian story including significant people such as our first Saint, Mary MacKillop. The Year 6s were able to visit the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre as a group and explore her life. Together we looked at   how she helped to look after lots of less fortunate people all across Australia, as well as how she was a part of setting up Australia’s first school! Mary MacKillop definitely inspired us to show the values of courage, kindness and generosity in our lives. We also went to Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral which was an amazing and reverent experience!

In order to prepare for our Confirmation which will take place this Saturday, we have been researching the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.  We felt as though we could ask deeper and meaningful questions once we understood the importance of these gifts as a part of Confirmation. The Year 6's also took a closer look at some of the different Saints and their stories. This was to help us select a Confirmation name so we could carry the Saint, their story and values as a guide in our lives! We are also very excited to have Bishop Terry Curtin come and visit us on Wednesday. He will come and help teach us about the importance of Confirmation and why we celebrate it. The Year 6s can’t wait for their special day and are looking forward to being Confirmed into the Catholic community!

In reading and writing this term we have discovered what persuasive tests are and what a good one looks like. After reading a few persuasive texts and learning about what to include in one we started to research about a moment in Australian history (such as Captain Cook arriving in Botany or the first Football game). We did this so that we can write a letter to a rich/famous person to use their time machine to go back and either meet, observe or change something from Australian history. At this point, we have finished planning/researching and started to write the introduction.

Maths

This term in Math we have learnt a few new things including: algebra, BODMAS and fractions. In week one and two of this term we were able to use algebra to solve patterns and simple equations. BODMAS (Brackets, Order/Indices, Divisions, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) is very important for solving many long multi-step equations. After becoming masters of BODMAS we moved on to fractions, so far we’ve learnt how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. Learning fractions was confusing at first, but it got easier and easier each session after learning how to successfully work out fraction based questions. We can’t wait to show how well we can solve fraction problems when it comes to showing others.
