Rubbish Free Lunches at CHPS

CHPS aims to be Rubbish-Free

Several years ago, Croydon Hills Primary School’s Sustainability team along with our Junior School Council and School Council implemented a Waste reduction policy in an effort to reduce waste at our school, reduce our carbon footprint and teach students about the importance of waste minimization. As of 2017, all fruit and vegetable scraps have been composted using the classroom compost bins. As our school has grown over the past few years, we found that our composting system was struggling with the amount of compost we were creating. What a great problem to have! In 2019 we enlisted the help of Waste Ninja: a recycling service which collects compostable materials and composts them appropriately, transforming this waste into usable energy.

“Our EPA licensed organics recovery partners use proven technologies to recover valuable resources including 100% renewable energy and organic fertiliser, powering Aussie households and providing nutrients to local farmers.”

At CHPS, non-compostable waste (plastic wrappers, etc.) brought from home is sent home in students’ lunchboxes. Our outside bins are only for Canteeen rubbish and compostable waste. We strongly promote rubbish free lunches with our students in order to develop environmentally conscious citizens. By reducing the number of times our school landfill skip is emptied, we can save the school a significant amount of money on waste removal. In turn, these finances can go back into our school for student programs and learning opportunities.

Here are some rubbish-free lunch & snack tips:

Rubbish-Free Lunch has many other benefits apart from reducing waste volumes - it also helps prevent litter, it can create the opportunity to introduce recycling and composting / worm farming systems at home and at school, and it also encourages students to bring healthy food.  “Brain Food” such as fruit and vegetables does not require any wrappers! Have fun trying out a variety of Rubbish-Free Lunch options with your children! Look at your current lunch foods and packaging practices: How much waste does your current lunch create? - PAPER / PLASTICS / FOIL.

Compare the cost!

950g tub = $5.50

100g serving = $1

This tub has 9.5 100g servings

This pouch has 1 100g serving

58 cents per serving and less plastic waste!

$1 per serving and more plastic waste!

Here is a suggested way to pack a rubbish-free lunch:

Brain Food: Fresh fruit / vegetables. No need for wrapping!

Snack: Fruit or vegetables and some cheese/crackers/biscuits/muffins/yoghurt in reusable containers!

Lunch: Sandwich or a wrap in a reusable lunchbox/container!

Drinks can be carried in plastic reusable bottles or flasks. Water is far healthier than fizzy drinks, cordials and other sugar-laden juices. Water is also far more thirst quenching. Where possible, avoid buying bottled water. Melbourne water is the best!
