Ellie Jones was awarded the Dux for 2019, having completed an outstanding VCE program whilst fully upholding the College values. Ellie started her Year 12 studies in 2018 fast tracking History Revolutions and receiving an outstanding study score of 43. In Year 12, she completed a program of English, Further Mathematics and Health and Human Development. Results in the Maths area were pleasing, but it was in the Health and Human Development and English area where she did their best work. Ellie finished on top of both of these classes and received outstanding study scores of 43 in Health and Human Development and 42 in English. This is a true reflection of the dedication and commitment she put into their studies in 2019 and her ability to manage time effectively and work independently.

An enthusiastic, dedicated and mature student, Ellie did not only achieved highly academically but involved herself in the school and wider community. She was the College Captain in 2019 and represented the school at many community engagements. Ellie was a member of School Council where she advocated for all students in the College, was a member of the Student Representative Council and Rose House Vice-Captain. Outside of school Ellie was invited to be part of the Education State Student Advisory Group and welcomed the opportunity to provide feedback to government delegates on the importance of education in rural Victoria. Ellie has been an active part of fundraising for our local community cinema and recently completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Ellie received a Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority VCE Leadership Award to commend them on their leadership within the school, local and wider community.

As a result of her excellent ATAR of 92.05, Ellie was accepted into her first preference course at the Australian National University, completing a Double Degree in Public Policy and Development Studies. This week, she moved into residence at Ursula College and is excited to commence her studies. She continues her work in advocating for rural education, presenting at the Sydney Morning Herald Education conference in Sydney next week.

Learning Growth

At Cobram Secondary College, we have the hard evidence to show that we grow students! Our 2019 NAPLAN data measuring learning growth from Year 7 to Year 9 demonstrated stellar results. In Reading, Writing and Grammar & Punctuation, students at Cobram Secondary College grew higher than other local schools in our network, but more importantly, also above the Victorian State Average!

We are proud of our college community's achievements. It demonstrates that our focus on reading is paying impressive dividends and transferring into student improvements in writing. Illuminate works! Boost works! Our whole college focus on the explicit teaching of reading skills across all learning areas works! We are excited to continue this academic focus and widen our scope to include writing.

Our passionate Mathematics team are working to further enhance professional practice in numeracy to help grow our students.

ATAR and Study Scores

Our academic success is not limited to the middle years. Cobram Secondary College continues to shine at the VCE level. Cobram Secondary College was the highest performing state school in the Goulburn region and ranked fourth amongst all school sectors. We saw a large growth in the average ATAR in 2019, along with an increase in average study scores.

This has resulted in most of our students receiving their first or second offers into university, attending a wide range of institutions such as the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, RMIT, Deakin and Latrobe, to name a few. Cobram Secondary College has helped our graduates find the keys to unlock their futures, and what exciting times lay ahead for them.
