Why being SunSmart at school is so important
Did you know that the school setting plays an integral role in reducing future skin cancer rates? There are a few reasons for this.
Firstly, childhood and adolescence are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer later in life. This means that the more UV exposure you get while growing up, the greater your risk of skin cancer.
Secondly, school hours fall during times of peak UV radiation. Given children spend five days a week at school during peak UV periods, it is critical that students are protecting their skin. Of course, sun protection is still needed while out and about on weekends!
Finally, by developing healthy sun protection practices at a young age, students are more likely to carry these habits into adulthood.
How to be SunSmart:
* When UV is 3+
* Slip-on covering clothing
* Slop on SPF30 or higher, broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
* Slap on a broad-brimmed hat
* Seek shade
* Slide on sunglasses
