Year 1 News

Our new campus

From Karen, Year 1 teacher

Year 1 had a very exciting week transitioning and settling into the new campus. They love the new space, and have been having lots of fun in the two new playgrounds.

Reading

The students have been learning about inferring, which is using the clues from the texts and pictures as well as their prior knowledge to form an idea about what is not literally in the texts. We read a wide range of texts, such as “Pig the Pug”, “The Terrible Plop” and “Brenda is a Sheep” to support the students’ learning in this area. Towards the end of the week, most students were able to use a wide range of clues from the text to support their inferences.

Writing

Students are learning to make their writing more engaging by including similes. We, again, have read lots of mentor texts to give students some good ideas about this figurative device, such as “My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Sock” and “My Friend is as Sharp as a Pencil”. The students then had the opportunity to practice their writing by including a simile in, which they did a really good job in!

Math

We have started a unit on addition and subtraction. We played various Math games both with the teachers and with peers to practice their arithmetic strategies. The students have particularly enjoyed 'Racing to 20', 'Get out of My House' and 'Strike it Out'.

Reconciliation Week

To recognise Reconciliation Week, the Year 1 students created class Acknowledgement to the Country. They have enjoyed looking through materials about Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day, and understanding the importance of respecting our land and people.
