Teaching and Learning in PE

ATHLETICS

Throughout Term 1 our middle and senior grades learnt and trained to perform in our athletics events leading up to our House Athletics Day which was held on Tuesday March 21st. Lilley House once again proved to be too strong, winning the House Athletics trophy for 2023. Students who placed first or second in any of the events have qualified to represent Langwarrin Primary at the Murdoch District Athletics Carnival which will be run on Tuesday 29th August. The hurdles and triple jump events will be run during P.E lessons at the beginning of term three to determine who qualifies for district athletics.

NETBALL

During Term 1, Year 4 students participated in a netball clinic at school for four weeks by a qualified and experienced coach, which was great for the students. The focus on netball continued this term for our middle and senior students who learnt a lot about the game, including the rules of stepping, contact and obstruction but more importantly about moving into space to receive a pass with speed and intercepting.

JUNIOR GRADES

Students in the junior grades have continued to play the much-loved tag and co-operative games. Students have explored movement through dance, and they love to dance during any activity at all when the music is playing. Students have also been exposed to the core fundamental movement skills of dodging, jumping, hopping, running, and skipping, as well as learning the skills of catching, throwing, striking, dribbling, kicking, and passing when playing soccer in a variety of games and activities. Students are currently learning to balance and co-ordinate their bodies when performing balances and exercises during our gymnastics unit. The junior classes this term were fortunate to of had coaches from Kelly Sports visit their classes during P.E to showcase their after-school program which they loved. Information on how to join the program can be obtained at the school office.

BEEP TEST

Throughout each term, the middle and senior students participate in an endurance test, which is a real highlight for a lot of students, and a bit of a low light for others. It is really rewarding for many students to see the progress they have made each time they participate, by beating their previous level. It is also a great assessment tool to see how students have performed in areas of endurance, effort, fitness, and their mental and physical strength. We now have the BEEP TEST LEADER BOARD that students are eager to get their names on!

GRADE 6 SUMMER LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIPS

The first week of Term 2 saw our Year 6 students get to play in their chosen summer sport, which they had been training for throughout Term one. Students competed against other schools in the Murdoch District in rounders, newcombe and cricket. The newcombe team continues to be a force to be reckoned with, having now won three trophies in a row for Langwarrin Primary at these competitions.

HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

All Year 3 to grade six students competed at the Langwarrin Primary School House Cross Country held at Lloyd Park on Thursday 4th May. Our nine-year-old students who ran their very first cross country did an amazing job and should be proud of themselves to finish their race and overcome a range of emotions prior to and during the race. To all our age groups, what a great effort running two and three kilometres through wet grass, and different terrain throughout the course. Well done to Lilley House, who, again won the overall standings and title as the 2023 Cross Country Champions. To our committed and supportive parents who helped enormously with making this event go ahead by standing on the course, and by guiding and encouraging our athletes, and by walking student groups to from the event WE THANK YOU!
