GENERAL NEWS

National Science Week is the annual celebration of science and technology.

Why celebrate science and technology? Science and Technology Week is recognising and enthusing our children as future innovators in science, medicine, design, environment….you name it and somewhere along the path, science has been an integral part of the development of so many projects!

Here at  St Nicholas School, we will celebrate  Science Week in Week 10 (19th Sept- 23rd Sept). We will be celebrating with science activities in the learning spaces, on the playground and we will post some science challenges for home activities. These home activities are optional, though always fun!

Please find below activities and links which as a family you might like to participate in. If possible, please send me photos of your successes and failures (mistakes are always learning opportunities)  so that we can gather  them together to present in the newsletter.

Don’t forget to take photos and send them to Mrs Dickie….  kdickie@arm.catholic.edu.au

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS

Two St Nicholas School teams competed in the Tournament of the Minds Regional Finals at Tamworth High School on Saturday 27th of August.

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a program for all primary and secondary students providing the opportunity to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative enterprise, excellence and teamwork. Both of our teams were competing in the ‘Language Literature’ category. Their challenge was to examine three well known antagonists from literature; poems, novels, fables or fairy tales, and show how these characters had been unfairly treated. The teams also completed an impromptu challenge - one given to them on the day that they had 5 minutes to respond to.

‘The Drama Queens’ (Poppy, Neeve, Lucy, Lyla, Toby, Eve and Eve) were awarded the trophy for the best language literature performance. ‘The Untitled’ (Bronte, Oliver, Oliver, Georgie, Mia, Ruby and Morgan) received the most overall points from both performances (prepared and impromptu) and were eligible to go to the finals in Sydney on 11th September. Unfortunately this event clashes with our Year 6 students' Sacrament of Confirmation, meaning we are unable to compete. However it is a testament to the skill, talent and dedication of all students to have achieved such outstanding results in this competition. We already can’t wait for next year!

Thank you to Mr Tim Unwin for his coordination of our St Nicholas teams!

Congratulations to the following children who received Veritas Awards last week.

FEAST DAY MUFTI DAYS

This term we will be celebrating the following feast days with a mufti day for the children in that house.

Friday 9th September

Fredric Ozanam Feast Day - Mufti Day (Ozanam students only)

On any mufti day hats and enclosed shoes are a must.

LOST PROPERTY

Most mornings, a dedicated little group of students willingly give up their playtime to help return lost property items to their owners. We LOVE seeing labelled jumpers, hats, drink bottles, lunchboxes and library bags. Sadly though, the majority of items we come across, are not labelled and their owners are simply not coming forth to claim them. As a result of this, we have collected an enormous stock of unclaimed clothing that we will now wash and re-sell in our clothing pool. Whilst we are constantly encouraging our students to take responsibility for their belongings.......please, please, please LABEL EVERYTHING.

PUPIL FREE DAYS - Term 3

Please place the following dates in your diary. These dates are when staff will be undertaking professional development therefore will be pupil free days in Term 3.
