This term has seen Certificate III students complete the marking, handling and yard training of this years’ calves.  We have also been busy signing off competencies such as livestock observations, monitoring water, muster, move and handle livestock for Certificate II.  The calves continue to grow nicely and the replacement heifers and ration cattle are looking great!  The downside to this term has been the loss of our beloved Cheryl.  So easily identified and so easily feared at calving time!  We are wrapping up with our Year 12 students in the next few weeks, but this then paves the way for the Year 11 students to get their hands a lot dirtier!

Business as usual in the piggery this term. Over 200 baconer pigs were sold to Linley Valley and 14 slaughtered on site for the college kitchen. There has been a 92% conception rate with our sows that have been artificially inseminated which is great to see. We started a new vaccination program, and the grower/finisher pigs are in great health despite the colder months.  The first of the Certificate III pork students' gilts are due to farrow in the next 2 weeks which has a few students very excited. On Open Day we had one of our new boars on display as well as some gilts, weaners and piglets."
