Spotlight on Literacy
Each fortnight a different grade will be in the SPOTLIGHT sharing Literacy inside the classrooms!
Welcome to Literacy in Kindergarten!
In Kindy, we have been busy consolidating our sounds and extending our writing. We are learning to include conjunctions, adjectives and action verbs in our writing to make it more exciting!
We are also really enjoying our DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) sessions with our buddies every Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Benefits of Writing Competitions
Writing Competitions for students can have several benefits, particularly because they can promote the development of writing skills. They also encourage a healthy sense of competition and a commitment to excellence among the young people who participate in them. Good writing and critical thinking skills are important to success in school, in employment, and in life. By participating in writing competitions, students can hone these skills for their future benefit.
Some competitions encourage students to address controversial and pertinent social topics. By participating in such contests, the students can raise awareness about these issues and in some cases can actually contribute to the ways others think about and actually address these concerns. Competitions may encourage students to improve their writing skills.
The Year 5 students are preparing their entries for The Red Room Poetry Competition. The competition invites students to use their words to make positive climate action. For every nature poem received a tree is planted to help heal habitats and create a POEM FOREST for future generations. In 2021, over 5,000 poem trees were planted.
Here are some of the Year 5 entries -
Palindrome Poems
Vision For Future by Sophia
Picturesque ambiance replaces weakened land
I refuse to believe that
Climate change will destroy the world
I’ll tell you this,
Connection to land
Is more important
Making money through unhealthy fuses
I’ll let you know that
Once upon a time
Life was alive
It will be evident that
Bushfires will demolish the world
Experts tell me
There will be more plastic than fauna
In the future
Earth will flourish again.
Reflective Poem by Phoenix
As I walked through the charming forest the sounds of chirping,
whistling and flowing creeks took over.
I think it’s about time that everyone realises first nations took care of the country.
As the black cockatoo croaked, I stood there ready to pronounce my speech.
At sunset I finally started speaking, I said,
“Today on this land I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which this poem is written. I pay my respects to the elders, past, present and emerging for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hope of aboriginal Australia.
We must always remember that under this concrete and asphalt, the school was and always will be on traditional First Nation people's land”.
