Library

Term 3

Greetings from the library.

What a busy time we have had here. And such fun! As most people know, it was National Book Week and we here in the library decided to do our very own celebration of all things books. Which books, you ask. None other than those infamous, notorious, banned books. Yes, indeed. We had Banned Books Week here at CHS and what a smashing success it was. Nasty books banned for being “a downer” and for evil “magic and superstitious themes”. Ooh, scary indeed!

During the week we had a Guess the Banned Book competition where students took a guess as to which shredded banned book was in the jar. Yes, the librarian had to shred a precious classic. There were many guesses but we could only have one winner. So congratulations to Delilah in year 7 for correctly guessing the book 1984 by George Orwell.

We also had the inaugural CHS Favourite Book OF ALL TIME!! vote. What an incredibly diverse selection of books voted for as favourites. I am really impressed with Coburg High’s readership level. Inspiring indeed. The number 1 book though as voted for by a huge amount of people was Heartstopper by Alice Oseman.

Finally, we had our monthly Library Trivia Master challenge. This time around it was a cryptic puzzle bonanza. Students were required to solve 15 cryptic clues to find the correct book for each clue somewhere in the library. There were students everywhere during recess and lunch each day, all determined to be the one to solve the puzzles first. When the challenge ended, we had a winner and that was……..drumroll……Samira P of year 7. A big congratulations to you for your enthusiasm and determination in solving these riddles.

Term 4

Greetings once more!

What a busy term 4 we have had so far. Here goes….

Coburg High recently hosted the 105th+1 reunion and I was very lucky to have such a thoughtful bunch of students both past and present purchase books for the library. I am humbled by your generosity and conviction to keep the library relevant as we move forward.

For our annual Halloween celebrations the library morphed into a haunted house and it scared just the right amount of staff and students. There really is nothing better than a creepy clown greeting you at the door.  We had a wonderful group of scary staff and students partake in the Jack O’Lantern carving activity as well. As you can see from the photos we had a lot of fun. A big thanks to Caitlin, Jeanette and Virginia for their help on the day.

This month’s Library Trivia Master challenge was a crazy one day event with the theme being all things Halloween. Our winner this time around was Douglas J who has won the monthly cafe voucher and is now in the draw for the end of year major prize. Good luck Douglas! Our last trivia challenge has just begun. Who will win the final trivia for the year? And more importantly, who will be crowned Library Trivia Master of 2022?

The library hosted the final book sale fundraiser for the year and raised $386 in total. Part of the funds raised will go towards the purchase of artwork composed by Mariana B from the graduating class of 2022. I cannot wait to see this beautiful piece on the walls of the library for all to see.

And finally, as we head towards the end of term it is lovely to see students here in the library reading, studying, playing chess and attempting the jigsaw puzzles. What a fantastic environment. Maybe a jigsaw puzzle club could be a future endeavour here in the library.
