Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

All schools walk a fine line with spectating. While we want to encourage boys to support their mates and it is awe-inspiring to see such passion for the school, we also have to be conscious of maintaining sportsmanship, positive cheering and our presentation when representing the College. Most schools would love to have that special something that Marist has that sees boys want to support their friends and see the College succeed in sport and activities. It truly is motivating for us as a College as we know how much the College means to the boys, both playing and spectating. We most certainly never want to lose that spirit and enthusiasm, but you guessed it, there is a but coming. At times throughout the year that enthusiasm and passion has crossed that line that we tread. That line is clear enough, it is

  • Not booing an opponent
  • Not making noises to put an opponent off
  • Not commenting publicly at all about an opponent unless encouraging or acknowledging good play
  • Not wearing the College uniform incorrectly, or poorly

Essentially if it has a negative connotation it is not on. Consider whether you would say it to your grandma. Our uniform amongst the spectators is not good enough. The current rule is that all spectators must be in full winter uniform unless they have played the game directly before the firsts match. In basketball, on the weekend we had boys from younger teams, who played earlier in the day, and boys from rugby league and tennis who had plenty of opportunity to get changed but chose not to.

For the last couple of rounds boys will be asked to leave the venue if your uniform or your behaviour are not exemplary. Positive cheering and support is encouraged, the players love your support, but it must not step over the line.

Congratulations to our 1st V basketball team winning on Saturday against Iona. I have been really pleased to see the way this team has stuck together in a difficult season. They always work really hard, are committed to each other, selfless and have a team-first attitude. I was extremely proud of them, not only on Saturday for the win, but throughout the season as they represented the College with dignity, sportsmanship and respect at all times. Well done to Coaches Mr James Lidstone and Mr Mike Lidstone, and Basketball Co-ordinator Mr John Lambourne.

Our hockey season for 2022 ended recently and I want to take this opportunity to thank the boys for their commitment to their sport and the College. You were fine ambassadors for the College and while the result was not what you may have wished for, you can be proud of your efforts and accomplishments. Congratulations to Nick Keir who was the leading goal scorer across the entire competition. Thank you to the coaches for your work in mentoring and supporting the boys, particularly Ms Kathryn Badini who coordinates the program so well and is passionate about the sport and the College.

Congratulations to Nick Keir

Our rugby league program is continuing to improve week after week, with a strong showing on the weekend in Ipswich against league school Iona. The boys matched their opponents throughout the grades and the 1st XIII were gallant in defeat, with some errors just after half-time being the difference.

Track and Field is in full swing with some terrific performances at Met North last week and a series of meets and the camp coming up ahead of the big one- the AIC Championships straight after the holidays.

Tennis has been the shining light this term. Something not many would have predicted a couple of years ago. The 1st IV suffered their first loss, narrowly going down 5-3 against the favourite and Marist more than holding our own throughout the day. Well done to Mr Andrew Ward and the entire tennis team for what has so far been an outstanding season.

Track and Field - Mr Derek Lennon

The track and field team is working extremely hard now as we work towards the AIC Championships in 6 week.

Thursday 1 Sept - AIC Track and Field Meet #2 - This week Marist will again take a bus at end of school for secondary students to record performances for AIC team selection. Marist has won this title 7 years in a row and to continue our strong position in Track and Field we ask all athletes to come and record a time/distance/height so the best team can be sent to AIC in Term 4, week 1.

** Term 3 Meets - Note there are another 2 meets coming up on 8th Sept (Thu) and 14th Sept (Wed) to record times and performances for team selection. Please ensure all athletes make time to attend this meet and record a time and distance.

** Track and Field Camp 15-17 Sept - Note that invitations will go out to a number of secondary athletes this week to attend Track and Field Camp on 15th Sept-17 Sept (Thu, last day of school through to Sat). Due to limited accommodation, a team of around 60 athletes will go and we will try to accommodate as many keen athletes as we can until we have full lodges. Note that the final team is closer to 80-90 athletes so there will still be plenty of opportunities to record times and distances during the holiday meets and training in preparation for AIC Championships early in Term 4.

Basketball - Mr John Lambourne

1st V – Round 5 vs. Iona College

Coach’s Report

It’s been a tough season to date for the 1st V, playing some great basketball in patches but we were yet to put together a full 32 minutes of smart, unselfish, team basketball. The boys had a really good week on the training floor, pushing each other and challenging each other to get better. Without challenging each other we can’t get better. The game against Iona was also going to be a tough one. Iona jumped us early with some quick transition baskets but the boys showed good resilience and steadied the ship. All through the 1st half it was basket for basket in a seesawing affair, some unselfish defensive pressure had the Iona stars frustrated and at the main break we held a 1-point lead. As the second half began it was going to be a matter of which team controlled the tempo the best would get away with the win. Our full-court pressure was relentless for the whole game and some clutch steals helped get some easy baskets and stretched out the lead to 5. We got our noses in front and continued to get defensive stops. Early in the 4th some great offensive execution and a couple of big 3s gave us a lead that Iona couldn’t claw back. It’s hard to single out any one individual performance, it was a rewarding win for the boys with everybody playing their part. A big thanks must go to the support crew that turned up for our game, your noise and cheering was enormous and without doubt makes the Champagnat Centre an intimidating place for opponents to play! Thank you, the boys love playing in front of you! We venture to St Peter's this weekend which will be another challenging game before returning home for our final game v St Pats.

Captain’s Report

Round 5 saw the second home game for the season with the 1st V boys taking on Iona College. Keen to break the negative streak and prove their worth, the Marist boys attacked hard, ensuring the game was kept close the entire time. Multiple lead changes and foul trouble kept both teams on edge, with the win in anyone’s reach. A dominant performance by big men Dylan Cooper and Ethen Tsiamalili ensured our success, with Dylan’s defensive presence being unmatched the whole game, and Ethen’s scoring abilities leading the team with 18. Year 10 guard Matt Gibson gave a glimpse of his abilities as well, both inside and outside the arc, finishing with a strong 16. The entire Marist side showed depth and composure, staying tight and determined for the full 32 minutes, with the final score of 66-59 to show.

Rugby League - Mr Ryan Apps

I would like to congratulate all our Marist teams on their performances last Saturday, whether it be a win or a loss it was great to see all of our teams give that always 100% Marist effort.

Our Rugby League season has been an outstanding success so far, I and the school along with I am sure all our families and supporters are very proud of what not only the players, but our coaches and support staff have been developing since the commencement of the season.

With a bye round this weekend, we look forward to hosting the final games of the AIC Rugby League Season on Saturday, September 10th. All Marist teams will be playing their final game on McMahon Oval so it would be wonderful to see as many of our school cohort as possible turn up to support all of our teams in their last game, we welcome all families and supporters to please join us in celebrating an enjoyable and successful season for all of our teams that competed.

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend off and the teams prepare for the following weekends games versus St. Pats.

1st XIII Report by Dan Witt

After a narrow loss the week before, the 1st XIII travelled out to Ipswich to verse the unbeaten Iona side. Right from the kick-off, both teams knew it would be a hard-fought battle. Some beautiful work around the middle from specialist hooker, Rory Baker saw MCA scoring the first try through Connor Lyons. Iona hit straight back with two of their own tries through some broken play, making it 12-4 going into the break with MCA only having 12 men for the next 10 minutes. Determined to swing the momentum back, Ashgrove came firing back with a great set-piece try to Tobias Graham, set up by Cody O'May's brilliant hands. Determined to regain control of the match, Iona's work around the ruck proved to be too strong despite the efforts of young gun Jasper Barry and his brother Tasman. Iona scored 3 unanswered tries to claim victory at Tivoli, 30-10.

Round 5 Wrap Up v Iona College

Year 5-6 - Ms Little

Congratulations to our 5A and 5B Tennis Team who won their 5th round of competition against Iona 5-3 and 8-0. The boys were convincing in their victory. Special congratulations must go to the following boys who kept their opponents scoreless in their singles competition: Cooper Chaseling, George Holland, Quinton Reibelt, Riley Peatey, Brasco Forest and Pedro Chadud. Congratulations must also go to our 6B team who also managed to defeat their Iona counterparts 6 – 2. Special mention to Charlie Kelly and Gabe Pua who both won their singles games. Special mention must also go to Andrew Vetter whose tenacity on the court, along with his graciousness in defeat, continues to impress. Our 6A Team has had a challenging season to date and this week was no exception. Whilst the boys can be proud of the way they played their games despite their 8 – 0 loss, it is the way players lose a game that shows the true mark of character. To this end, I would like to especially congratulate Jack Lambley and Roy Power who, despite the disappointment, showed graciousness and resilience in defeat. Well done boys.

Year 7-8 - Ms Earle

Congratulations to both our year levels with great wins across all four teams. Year 7A won 7-1 and 7B won 5-3.

Our Year 8A and 8B both won 6-2 to completely outclass their opponents on the day. A very entertaining match to watch for all and great to see the boys improving each week.

Too many boys to mention this week so I will congratulate all boys for the way you held yourselves by winning humbly. Thank you again to all the parents who help out and make the day more enjoyable.

Year 9, 4th and 5th teams - Ms Baillie

Our Year 9A boys had a top-of-the-table clash with Iona and were visited by Mr Ward who put the boys through the warm-up procedures. You could tell by the looks on the parents faces from the opposition that Marist tennis is well and truly on the rise as the team looked like professionals getting ready for battle. Our boys showed their class in winning 6-2 against an opponent who had not lost this season. Well done Lachlan, Hamish, Andrew and Elliot.

The 9B also won 7-1 and both teams remain undefeated at the top of the table with a showdown again this week against St Peters. Congratulations to Ben Cross, Kian, Max and Ben Mead.

Also, a shout out to their mate Jordie who is recovering from a knee injury. The boys have not forgotten you and although not playing still a big part of the team.

Opens 2nd, 3rd and Year 10 Andrew Ward

Our second team had a great win against their opponent 7-1 with wins in singles to Will Moon, Ruben Darwin and Nelson McKay. Our boys also won all their doubles too. Great effort boys.

Our 3rd team also won 5-3 with great wins to Andrew Milner, Harry Masel and Charlie Wilkinson. 2-2 in the doubles with both our pairings winning one and losing one. Fantastic effort boys.

Our Year 10 teams both had good wins with our 10A team winning 5-3 in some very entertaining matches. Good single wins to Harry, Rory and  Jake. A very close loss to Henry against a very good opponent. Our boys are also 2-2 in the doubles

Our 10 B team completely dominated their match-winning 8-0 with good wins in singles to Ollie Betts, Ash Kani, Lucas Hancock and a never say die performance from Oscar Darwin winning in a Tie break. Well done boys you should be proud of the way you played this week.

1st Team report - Andrew Ward

After losing to Iona last year 8-0 our team was not about to sit back lightly as the top-of-the-table clash with Iona would almost secure the title for the winner.

We held our own in the doubles 1-1 with a great win to Louis Morris and Blake Harrold. The top two for Iona were very accomplished players and after some very exciting rallies our top two of Frank Baker and Liam Webb losing to their opposites. This was Liam’s first singles loss of the campaign against a left-hander which proved difficult at times to play against. 3-1 down but not out of it we had our No 3 and 4 players on with a loss in a ten-point tiebreak to Louis and a win for Blake in a ten-point tiebreak as well. 4-2 and just the reverse doubles to go. We knew at this point we could not win the tie but we could sure try and win both doubles. A good win to Liam and Frank and a tight match for Louis and Frank but going down in the end by the top two to give our boys the first loss for this season. Defeated but not embarrassed as our boys showed humility and displayed the Marist spirit even though going down to the last year’s champions. Congratulations to all our boys for a great day of tennis and the improvement in which you have constantly displayed throughout the year. Well done and now let's get ready for St Peters this coming Saturday.

The National Cross-Country Championships in South Australia on the weekend saw the best runners from Australia and New Zealand compete. Sport Canteen

After a welcome break, Sports Canteen is looking for volunteers for this coming Saturday 3 September.

https://signup.com/go/wEBuzsX

The ask remains for parents to volunteer one hour across the term if you have a son playing sport. From this weekend, we will also be broadening the volunteering net to students who wish to provide service within the MATES program.

MATES -  Marists are Taking Everyone Seriously - is an umbrella term that the College uses to incorporate all activities that our students do in solidarity and justice. Working in the sports canteen is one of the many ways that we gather as a community. It serves as a unique opportunity to work side by side with family members, or perfect strangers - to support holistic education, to be present and engaged to our own community, and to serve, welcome and assist all of those who visit us across Saturday sport.

To participate, students are asked to:

  • (By Friday 12:00pm): SignUp using the normal sports canteen SignUp links.
  • (Saturday after service): Record name details on the MATES form inside the canteen, and obtain Canteen Coordinator’s signature before leaving.

The following conditions will apply:

  • Years 11 and 12 can sign up and serve without a parent/guardian;
  • Year 5-10 need to sign up and serve with a parent or guardian.
  • Counter service only for student - no grills, or deep fryers.
  • Sandwich toasters will be ok to use.

This coming Saturday is a relatively normal canteen day. We encourage you to also look ahead and plan your SignUp for Saturday 10 September, when Marist will be hosting all AIC schools for rugby league - we will be looking for all the help we can get!
