STATE BASEBALL, SENIOR BOYS

On Tuesday the 23rd of May our Senior Baseball Team arrived at Cheltenham Baseball Club full of energy and aspiration in readiness for the SSV State Baseball Finals. After finishing 2nd in the EMR Finals, we were invited to attend the State Finals as a Country team were unable to make it. It is safe to say this was welcomed with open arms as this team has played together for many years without the ultimate success of a State Final.

The first game of the day against Bentleigh SC saw our team jump out of the gates with 5 runs in the first inning. Excellent pitching from Jake M allowed our team to maintain a solid lead throughout the whole contest. With some proactive base running and explosive bats, Vermont SC were too good!

Moving into the 2nd game against Manor Lakes College, our team were full of confidence and strong vibes! Unfortunately, this game proved difficult with a State Representative throwing fire balls and beating our bats. However, due to the extended games at State level, our team hung in there and saw off their starting pitcher, before making a strong run for the win with 8 runs in the final 2 innings. Unfortunately we finished this game down 11-10, however on count back, our percentage was strong enough to progress.

To the extreme delight of our students, the Cinderella story of this team making the State Final was scripted to perfection. With a tough battle ahead, Maribyrnong Sports Academy consisted of numerous Australian and Victorian Baseballers. Our students were overjoyed for making this Grand Final and were already winners in their eyes! The game ended in a strong deficit, however, it was a hugely successful day for Vermont Secondary College!

Mr Coles would like to thank the following students for their commitment to the VSC Baseball Program over the many years whilst attending the College: Patrick C, Tyson G, Jack H, Tim K, Jaidyn L, Jake M, Blake M, Manny M, Dru P, Ethan R, Jack R, Caelan S, Masato Y.

GALA DAY

Senior Girls Football

The senior girls football team had an absolute day out at Springfield Park on the 23rd of May. The team remained undefeated throughout the entire day of competition which is a testament to their relentless attitude and on field performance.

Vermont v Glen Waverley

Game 1, the vibes were good and the team was on! Vermont led the charge at halftime 19-0, the halftime messaging was clear… Get first to the footy and the rest will take care of itself. The team did just that, winning the match 33-0.

Game 2 against Highvale was a steamrolling victory. Vermont winning 62-6. Plenty of goal scorers all round, particularly Jess D who booted 2 consecutive goals in a matter of minutes.

Game 3 was a win against Mount Waverley and a great way to round out the day. The team was yearning for Erin and Ella to kick a major, and kick a major each they did.

Well done to all players for their hard ball gets and great attitude throughout the entire day.

Ms Malander and Mr Jacobs

Intermediate Girls Football

On the 23rd of May 2023, year 10 and year 9 girls left VSC to go play football representing the college. We had a short journey to Heatherdale Reserve and played 3 games. Once we arrived, we got changed into our VSC playing jumpers and started warm-up. We did some jogging around the square and practised our kicking and handballs in groups.

Vermont v Glen Waverley

Our first game was an awesome outcome for VSC with a total thrashing of 15.7.97 to 0.0.0. Vermont never looked like losing as soon as the siren was blown. Special mentions to our goal kickers: Emily E 5, Ally s 3, Tilly G 2, Paige VW 2, Kayla E 1, Holy D 1, Lily W 1.

Vermont v Highvale

Another great thrashing by VSC. Although this game was a little more competitive VSC stood their ground and kept Highvale to 0. The scores were 6.12.48 to 0.0.0. goal kickers for this game were: Tilly G 2, Taya C 2, Hannah R 1, and Amelie W 1.

Vermont v Mt Waverley

Another great game by VSC. This one was quite a jump from the other games, but VSC still pushed through and won. The other team was quite competitive and pushed the girls to play their very best. By the end of the game, we had a few girls with injuries including Amelie W with a black eye! By the end every girl worked hard and together they won! Their scores were: 5.0.30 to 1.6.12! our goal kickers were: Taya C 3, and Tilly G 2!

Overall VSC had a great day for interschool footy! All our games ending with a win means we will be able to go through to the next round! Everyone who participated in the sport did a fantastic job and should all be very proud of themselves and the outcome. Well done to Yr7 & Yr8 for winning all their games too, we will be able to go to the next round with them as well. Not sure when the date is yet, but we will get back to you!

Junior Girls Football

The Vermont junior girls AFL team were impressive across all three games in their opening round of matches. Playing against Glen Waverley SC in the first match, the girls were relentless in their attack on the ball and showcased some brilliant skills to win comfortably. Alex kicked an amazing goal that bounced at right angles to go through, Grace Fahey kicked a couple of goals to celebrate her birthday, and our midfielders had some excellent connection with Stephy in the ruck.

Score: Vermont 13.10 v Glen Waverley 0.0

We were a little inefficient in front of goals in game two, but that didn’t stop the girls from putting on another dominant display against Highvale. Fiona and Molly both kicked multiple

goals in the first half to build a healthy lead. The second half was not the prettiest spectacle, but we still managed to score some goals with a booming kick from Indigo, before Yana showed some class in kicking the final goal of the match.

Score: Vermont 9.11 v Highvale 0.0

The last game against Mount Waverley was essentially ‘the final’, as both teams were undefeated at that point. Mount Waverley had some handy players, but out girl nullified their output to lock the ball in our front half. It seemed to take a long time to kick our first goal, once Fiona and Chloe kicked two quick goals, Vermont took over the match. Melissa played a brilliant game across half back and a special mention to Stephy in this match – she faced a tough opponent in the ruck, but her ability to clear space was crucial for us so we could show our pace and skill.

Score: Vermont 5.5. v Mount Waverley 0.1

Well done to all involved. We’re excited about the second round.

Ms D’Arcy and Mr Healey

Senior Boys Netball

Excellent efforts across our senior Teams at Boys Netball on Tuesday. The boys showed some excellent skill, sportsmanship and teamwork across the day. The day was difficult with the boys having to play 3 full games each. The A team lost by 1 point to Highvale in a sudden death match – with a goal on the buzzer scored by Will not counted for the draw. A tough loss, but plenty of promise in the coming years.

Well done to the B team who showed great flexibility in all positions of the court across the day. 2 out of 3 wins for the day is an excellent result, and the boys should look forward to competing again next year!

Team members: Logan A, Luke B, Nathan C, Josh H, Will J, Noah L, Evan M, Stefen P, Kaelan S, Ben S, Atonio T, Zach T, Sam W and Jack W.
