Youth Homelessness City Tour
Youth Homelessness City Tour
Throughout the day, students on the City Tour gained invaluable knowledge about homelessness. They learned about the staggering rates and percentages of people facing homelessness, the underlying reasons behind it, and how it affects different age groups. Understanding how homelessness starts in the first place was particularly eye-opening. Witnessing the real effects of homelessness during the tour made them realize just how serious and widespread this issue is.
Some of the students' reflections are provided below:
James:
During the tour, our teacher showed us a PowerPoint presentation that provided us with new information about homelessness. We learned that in the 2021 census, over 122,414 people experienced homelessness in Australia. Additionally, we were informed about the City Salvos and their Magpie Café, which offers free food, access to psychologists, a free supermarket, and storage lockers for homeless individuals. It was emphasized that by buying items from the Salvos, the money goes towards supporting their initiatives.
Orlando:
Before the excursion, I held negative views about homelessness. However, this tour completely changed my perspective. I came to realize that everyone has a unique story, and it is unfair to judge people based on appearances. The tour highlighted the broad social inequities that contribute to homelessness, and I strongly believe that these individuals deserve respect and assistance in finding the support they deserve. I now feel a deep sense of compassion and motivation to help these people find the support they need and deserve.
Cohen:
Prior to participating in the City Tour, my understanding of homelessness was limited, and I didn't grasp the seriousness of the issue. I must admit that I initially thought it was somewhat pointless, assuming I already knew enough about homelessness. However, the tour completely transformed my perspective. Witnessing the real effects of homelessness and gaining a deeper understanding of its impact evoked a profound sense of empathy within me. As a result, I feel compelled to take action and contribute in some way, whether through donations or volunteering, to help combat homelessness.
Kayla:
Before the tour, I believed that homelessness only referred to living on the streets without a home. I also held the misconception that most cases were due to family problems or drug issues. However, when we were presented with the statistics, I was shocked. The
activity titled "But why" resonated with me, highlighting the importance of not making assumptions about others' circumstances. It became evident that raising awareness about homelessness and dispelling stereotypes is crucial. Hosting solidarity events and fundraisers to assist people sleeping rough in finding homes or housing are ways individuals and communities can contribute. This program has influenced me to treat people experiencing homelessness with respect and understanding, as they deserve.
Alec:
Although I missed the excursion due to personal reasons, I heard a story from my classmate Adam about a homeless person they heard during their visit. They visited an old bus stop that homeless people sought comfort and shelter at. They were told about a man named Brian, who was homeless and had to stay at the bus stop while waiting for a
home. Unfortunately, he developed an untreated blister that led to gangrene and eventual amputation. However, due to his disability, he became eligible for a home. This story deeply impacted the way I perceive homeless individuals.
Shifting the focus to the street art observed during the tour, students were captivated by how it interacted and blended with its surroundings.
Cohen:
Personally, I believe that art holds beauty in its diversity and offers different perspectives. As a creative individual, I appreciate and can recognize creativity and beauty in almost everything. Artwork often conceals intricate details and surprises that can be discovered through careful observation. The street art stood out, especially in the empty alleyways, making a bold statement. It felt fitting to see street art in these areas since graffiti and urban art are typically associated with such locations. Although these alleyways may initially appear barren, the art has the power to transform the atmosphere and capture attention.
Kayla:
The street art we encountered was incredibly inclusive and portrayed a range of emotions, highlighting aspects of our society that need change. Personally, I find art to be beautiful, as it allows individuals to express their views and emotions to the world.
In conclusion, the City Tour not only provided students with a new understanding of homelessness but also highlighted the transformative power of art in unexpected places. It inspired them to become more actively involved in addressing homelessness and to appreciate the creativity and beauty that can be found in all forms of art.
Special appreciation goes to Ms Rehak, Ms Krionas, Ms Renda, Ms Bauer and Ms Chahal for organizing this incredible excursion.
