Aged Care visits to Gwen Hardie Lodge

Over the last month or so, myself and seven other students, under the guidance of Mrs Henderson, have been making visits on a Wednesday afternoon to Gwen Hardie Lodge, an aged care home in Emu Point. On these visits, we aim to bring a bit of joy to the residents. So far, we have done some gardening with the residents, played floor games, and performed music. As of last week, both the herb gardens and the sensory gardens have seen some new plants, courtesy of Mrs Henderson. Recently, some of our group members spent a lovely afternoon planting herbs such as mint and basil, and some lavender. While they were out in the garden, the rest of our group was inside, performing music and playing a few floor games like mini basketball and quoits. I have really enjoyed playing piano and violin for the residents as I can see the joy that it brings them. I think the residents enjoy having music and games with us as they otherwise don’t necessarily get to have interactions with school-aged students. I would definitely recommend getting involved in something like this where you get to interact with the older generation as they have so much knowledge to share with us and it really makes their day to have someone to talk to.
