Primary School

From the Head of Primary

There is a popular trend in education right now whereby teachers are encouraged to utilise the environment as ‘the third educator’. Brought to life by the works of Reggio Emilia, the concept explains that behind educators and families, physical spaces hold the potential to influence what and how children learn. The land on which our school is set, and our camp and excursion offerings, bring this concept to life for students at GSG. This week our Year One students learnt about natural, managed and constructed features by busing around town to different parks; our Kindergarten and Year Two students spent time in our Wild Space; and our Year Four class spent the first half of the week exploring changes to our landscapes at the Gap, Windfarm and Quaranup whilst on camp. Detailed recounts and reflections of the Year Four Camp Quaranup will be shared next week.

Year One Excursion

On Wednesday, the Year One students got to go on their first-ever excursion! The weather didn’t look kind but that didn’t deter the class who, armed with raincoats, and full of excitement, set off on the bus.

The excursion was part of the HASS and Design Technologies inquiry unit on ‘the features of parks’, where the Year One students reinforced their understanding of natural, managed and constructed features of parks through their visits to the Albany Peace Park, Eyre Park and the Emu Point playground. They also got to test out their scientific knowledge of materials and their properties on this trip.

Students classified different features, drew labelled diagrams and explored a variety of playground equipment. However, the most important part of the excursion was then to test out the equipment!

Students will use this data in class (alongside photographs taken) to learn more about the design process of such equipment. They will then design and construct their own 3D models of playgrounds.

Thank you to Mrs Wegner, Mrs Le Roux and Mrs Standish for joining us on this fun-filled day!
