Secondary School

From the Head of Secondary

We have had a calmer week in Secondary School as students in Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve prepare for their examinations and other assessments. Their serious intent is flowing through to our younger students and it is interesting to see them watching the process of preparing for examinations.

Our Year Twelve cohort celebrated their halfway day today. The students enjoyed a sausage sizzle at lunchtime cooked by some of our Year Eleven students and the Year Twelve leaders crept into school early to leave a little chocolate surprise in their peers’ lockers.  Congratulations to our Year Twelve students for reaching this milestone, I look forward to a strong finish with this dynamic group.

Elevate

The Elevate team engaged students in Years Nine and Eleven on Friday, building on ideas we present at school to help students with their study techniques.

I had the following comments from our Year Nine students:

  • I took a lot of things out of the session and will use them later on when I have tests.  The most important thing I learnt was the storage technique; to create stories to memorise things.  Abbie
  • I learnt to use palm cards, creating stories and the importance of taking breaks when you study. Holly
  • The session was very encouraging and interactive. I learned how to make a better study environment. Sophie
  • I learned about the importance of your learning environment and that you need to turn your phone off and not just have it on silent. Lani
  • The session was interactive and fun. It’s important to have a good study environment.  Patrick
  • It was good to do something we wouldn’t normally do. The memory skills were good.  Harry
  • The presenter was really good. It’s nice that she was young because she wasn’t out of touch. I thought that learning how to retrieve stuff from your memory properly was the most important thing I learnt today.  Laila

The Year Eleven students made the following comments about the ‘Ace Your Exams’ session:

  • The program was good. It had some great advice and was very fun. I learnt how important practice papers are.
  • I learnt the importance of a study plan and not to be with people who stress you out.
  • The most important thing I learnt today was the significance of having a routine.
  • Breathe!

The ‘Student Elevation’ session generated this feedback:

  • It is important to set goals and be motivated.
  • The session was informative.  I learnt that my goals are not impossible and I need to work on them.
  • I learnt about ways to help with things you struggle with.
  • I liked the ‘Beliefs lead to Actions lead to Results’ part.
  • You don’t have to be naturally smart to do well, you just have to put in the effort.

Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference

The Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference is a four-day camp running from 29 September to 2 October 2023, that offers 45 students from across Western Australia the opportunity to engage in workshops, hear from motivational speakers and connect with like-minded students. The conference itself is organised and facilitated by first-year Fogarty scholar university student volunteers who are passionate about youth leadership. This year the Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference will be centred around the themes of sustainability and empowerment.

The conference has had the pleasure of hosting many influential speakers such as Fiona Wood and WA Chief Scientist Peter Klinken. Students also have the ability to participate in valuable leadership workshops and activities including politician panels and public speaking and networking seminars. Past workshops have been delivered by local organisations such as 180-Degrees consulting, Bloom and ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership and help students develop crucial soft skills such as problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking.

The Fogarty Futures committee believes this camp would be a fantastic opportunity for Year Ten and Eleven students attending GSG and would like to extend an invitation for students to apply. Applications will open on the 5 June and will remain open until mid-July.
