Exams

Our Year Twelve students begin exams this week. Under the present WACE arrangements exams remain a tool for predicting ATAR scores and ranking students. We wish our students well for these upcoming exams. With additional tertiary pathways available, exams are becoming less relied upon as an indicator of success.

This week I was reading an article regarding a school in the United Kingdom that has made the bold decision to remove exams from its curriculum. They deemed that in the area of assessing students, interviews would be a far more reliable indicator for future success.

While exams focus purely on academic knowledge, interviews provide a holistic overview by considering a student's skills, personality and potential growth. One significant advantage of interviews is their ability to evaluate soft skills that are critical for success in the modern world. Exams generally overlook interpersonal abilities such as communication, collaboration, adaptability, and creativity. Time will tell how exams will change in the coming years. In the meantime, the exams continue under the current arrangements.
