Secondary School

From the Head of Secondary

Over the weekend I spent time reading some of Bruce Lipton’s ideas and I was reminded about the power of our mindset. Amongst many other things, Term Two tends to be a term full of learning, assessments and growth. Many students in Years Ten, Eleven and Twelve are ready for this challenge and very much see this term as a necessary step to life beyond school.

For our younger students, the routine of learning and assessments can be more of a struggle, particularly in the mandated subjects outside of the core areas. I met with our Year Eight students this week to challenge them to be more positive about some of these subjects. I urged them to approach these classes with a little more curiosity and to engage in the creative tasks set by their teachers. With a change of mindset, I asked the Year Eight cohort to engage positively and strive for success in all of the classes on their timetables.

In Values and Christian Service (VACS) this week, I saw some of these ideas in action.  As the Secondary students joined the Primary students for a Mathematics lesson and the students were urged to work together, share ideas and ‘talk maths’, the changes in students’ attitudes were visible! Students from both subschools became more enthusiastic about the task at hand and deepened their understanding of all sorts of concepts. The new connections were fostered further when the Secondary students sat with the Primary students while they ate their lunch and then played with them in the playground.

World’s Greatest Shave

The Secondary School came together on Monday at lunchtime to watch 12 of our Year Twelve students cut their hair or shave their heads. The conditions were perfect with warm temperatures and no wind. Our courageous participants carefully collected their hair to either be made into wigs, compost or floating hair booms which absorb oil spills from our oceans.

As well as the donations of hair, this incredible team has raised $12,200 as I write this article, and we plan to add to this total in Term Three when we hold our Crazy Hair Day. This is an outstanding achievement and I thank the entire community for your support.

Elevate

Elevate had to cancel their sessions last Friday and we have been able to reschedule them for this week. As planned last week, I will make recordings of these sessions available to absent students in Years Nine and Eleven.

A number of GSG parents have been accessing the Elevate webinars and I have received very positive feedback about these sessions. Please see news from Elevate below about the next session. If you are unavailable at the scheduled time, please register anyway and a recording of the session will be made available to you.

Elevate Education's next free webinar will be taking place on Wednesday 24 May, titled ‘Ask Elevate Anything’. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you feel have been unanswered by Elevate in the webinars so far, whether that relates to your child’s study space, their motivation levels, the way they study – sign up to the webinar for an opportunity to have your question answered!

Elevate Education works with our students, delivering high-impact workshops on study skills, motivation, wellbeing, and exam preparation. By tuning into the webinar series you will learn how you can help better support your children at home through reinforcing the skills they learn at school.
