Assistant Principal's Report

By Anat Garzberg-Grant

In 2023, the theme for Education Week is “Active Learners, Move, Make, Motivate.” celebrating the many ways students learn, through physical activity, hands on learning and student voice.

What’s already happened?

What has education week looked like for GWPS?

To move, make and motivate, students connected with their buddies to show, explain and play their physical movement Home Learning games. Students found this exceptionally engaging and beneficial, sharing:

“It helps to strengthen our connections to our buddies”- Niyara
“Brain breaks make you feel more happy and excited for learning”- Sophie
“Brain breaks give you exercise which gives you energy”- Sai
“This learning task encourages us to use creativity and critical thinking”- Ellen
“This learning task makes us active during our learning day”- Shanaya

Students were motivated by Dr Gihan, who presented strategies for increasing the ability to memorise and five key points to happiness and wellbeing as:

  • Sleep
  • Eating healthy food
  • Exercise
  • Being out in nature
  • Relationships with others

Our students were so thrilled by this session, some reflecting:

Yuvi- “I learnt that if you picture something in your mind, you will have a clearer memory of that, rather than remembering the word”
Tanmay- “I learnt the five things that are guaranteed to make you happy, and I will aim to do these things in my life.”

In the ‘Make’ phase of Education Week and in the lead up to Open Morning, student voice led to the creation of ‘hands on’ learning tasks to showcase their growth in Inquiry learning. From using natural resources to create an animal’s habitat, plans to improve high quality communication in space in place of old radio wave technology, to identifying and planning for flora and fauna improvement across the school, our students were problem solvers, applying their learning to generate a prototype to share with families- and boy did our families add on to thinking- an experience the students really valued!

We congratulate our students and teaching staff for an outstanding Education Week and thank our families for attending Open Morning and making a real difference to the teaching and learning process.
