Kids Corner
The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features Ometh’s (Year 3) recount of how he and his family celebrated Vesak. Well done and thank you Ometh for sharing.
We also have some of our Year 4 English Innovation learners sharing their learning.
Thank you to all of the children who have contributed and I trust everyone enjoys reading their pieces just as much as I do!
My Vesak - (By Ometh)
Vesak day is a very special day for Buddhists. The birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of the Buddha took place on Vesak full moon day. Buddhists celebrate Vesak by doing meritorious acts and making Vesak lanterns. This time it was celebrated on the 5th of May.
To celebrate Vesak, I made a Vesak lantern. Its design is called Atapattama. First I made the Vesak lantern frame. This design of lantern I made is called Atapattama. Then I pasted it with blue, yellow, red, white and orange oil papers, which are the colours of the Buddhist flag. Then my mother hanged it on the roof of front veranda of my house. And my father arranged a bulb to light it up. On the Vesak day night, I lighted it up and it looked beautiful. Below I have shared some pictures of how I made my Vesak lantern.
The next day I went to the Keysborough “Dhamma Sarana temple” with my parents. There I offered flowers, lighted incense sticks and an oil lamp to Buddha and said Gatha. I watered and worshipped the Bo tree. Then we visited the Buddhist monk’s monastery and offered them some offerings. We received cooked Chickpea from a “Dansala” which is a donation of free food.
This is how is spent Vesak this year. And I am happy that I got to celebrate Vesak in this way and collect many merits. I wish to celebrate Vesak every year and do more meritorious things.

He went out of control! (By Dinal)
He fell off his ice floe and started swimming everywhere!
To the other side of the word! Until he hit a colony of walrus ‘Hey back
Off!” they bellowed. “well I’m off…I need to find my way home…” Pengy said as he bolted away, but…instead of going to the Antarctic he sort of went to the other side of the world. Until he was washed to the shore of the Sahara desert.
Pengy started to waddle deep into the Sahara desert until he bumped into a moving pile of sand “hey move it please” it said “Oh sorry if I scared you. Anyway, I’m Softpaws. I’m a sand cat who are you?” It asked as it shook all the sand off it’s fur.
“I’m Pengy I’m a penguin from the Antarctic”
“LOOK OUT! SAND VIPER!” Softpaws interrupted as Pengy watched as they hissed and stabbed each other Pengy was full of terror and he started to waddle as fast as his legs could take him. He started sobbing sadly as he said “I wanna go home!”
Pengy started to swim to the north towards Tokyo Bay, caught his breath and dived deep into the water 💦 but managed to get his foot tangled in weed, until…”SPIDER!”
Pengy screamed at the top of his voice!
“Sorry if I scared you! By the way my name is Spid the Japanese spider crab, let me help.”
He used his long arm to break the weed, his leg broke off. It’s ok it will grow in a year or two. Pengy started swimming until the water felt cold like home at last. “PENGY!”
Pengy’s mother started swimming towards Pengy. “I’m so relieved to see you again!” Pengy cuddled in his mother’s hug.

My Dream World by Aseli
When I fall asleep, I can dream of anything I want to while I rest my sleepy head.
The stars are twinkling above my head.
The stairs are creeping to an open end.
The birds are chirping.
The sun is shining and
The butterflies flutter around my dream world!
Nest Of Colours by Deeya
In a tree a bird is sitting in a nest. She has six eggs.
She sits on the eggs waiting for them to hatch.
She looks at the eggs and she is happy.
One day, she looks at the eggs and sees a crack in one of them. Then the other and then more and more. Soon, they all hatch!
One is orange, one is yellow, one is violet then green blue and purple. The mother is coloured red!
It is a rainbow! We are a rainbow family!!
The mother was really happy because her chicks hatched into beautiful colours!
