Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

1/2s have been diving further into our integrated unit by making Hairy Heads. They followed a procedure and enjoyed decorating their heads.

Hairy Head quotes:

“I loved cutting out the outfits because I love craft”- Teddy

“I loved making the Hairy Heads because the googly eyes go around and around and
that’s funn”’ - Elva

“The Hairy Heads were fun because I like using my imagination.’ - Pip

Maths:

Over the past two weeks students have been working on their mental computation of basic addition facts. They have been exploring spin-arounds (commutativity), counting on 1,2 & 3, tens facts, bridge to ten, doubles, add 10 and near doubles.

You might like to have a game of addition snap to check out their awesome skills.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

In integrated students will be investigating how to look after a country and preparing a ‘How to Look After Country’ presentation to the class. This task will require work at home and details will be sent home this week.

In Literacy, we will review all the sounds from Little Learners Love Literacy stage 7.2, followed by a focus on the sounds ‘oo’ as in goose and ‘le’ as in poodle. In writing we are looking at procedural texts and continuing to practise the writer’s process of planning, drafting, revising and editing.

In Maths, we will be making the connection between addition and subtraction. Students will continue to develop strategies for more efficient addition and subtraction basic fact instant recall. We are also exploring data collection and graph representation. Based on our Hairy Heads students will measure hair growth and represent it in a graph.
