Foundation Mainstream Celebrating Learning
Our home reading program is well and truly underway in Foundation! Children have received a communication folder that is to return between school and home each day as well as a home reading journal. In the classroom we are following the Little Learners Love Literacy sequence of phonics instruction, so our students are working on decoding strategies like sounding out words and blending sounds together. When reading with your child at home, you can use these strategies together:
- Moving your finger from left to right, following the direction of the text
- Using pictures and illustrations to find context clues to ‘read’
- Looking for letters and sounds we do know
- Comprehension strategies that we have used in class including retells (‘what happened in that story?) and text to text connections (‘that story reminds me of something in our life’). For the rest of the term we will be looking at text to text connections (‘that reminds me of another book!’) and text to world connections (‘that reminds me of something I’ve seen in the real world!’).
Teachers are checking home reading journals once a week and taking on feedback. Have fun reading!
