The Sparkle Times

‘You’re never fully dressed without a smile’ sang the Junior Performers:

As members of the 2023 Arts Team, myself (Diya) and Saskia have been assisting Ms Nugent run her Junior Performers group. Throughout Term 1 and early Term 2 the Junior Performers worked hard on their epic dance skills, their opera worthy voices and their warm smiles. The Junior Performers consist of Year 2's, 3’s and 4’s. The most recent song the group performed was ‘You’re never fully dressed without a smile’. You may have seen this at one of our recent assemblies!

On Friday the 5th of May the Junior Performers dressed up in dazzling, sparkly costumes and blew the audience away at assembly with their performance that they had been working super hard on. It was an amazing performance full of sparkle and smiles. We interviewed some of the Junior Performers on their thoughts about being a part of such a spectacular group:

“I really enjoy spending time with Ms Nugent and performing on stage and learning new dance moves” - Indie 3H

“Of course, I want to spend time with Ms Nugent because it’s really fun to dance and sing” -Eliza 3M

“Why I love the Junior Performance group is because I love singing and dancing my heart out and Ms nugent and the assistants Saskia and Diya are super nice” - Buddy 3L

“I love being in the performance group because I love dancing, singing and trying on all the costumes. I also love it because it helps me get over stage fright” - Mika 4F

Students use visual art as a voice for environmental sustainability:

Year Six students undertook a project in 2022 where they used visual means to express their opinion about how humanity needs to make positive changes for our environment. The project was a huge success and was in collaboration with Glen Eira Council and Ormond Uniting Church. The artworks are currently on display at Ormond Uniting Church on the corner of North Road. The display is rotated weekly so that every student is featured. Glen Eira News wrote about the project in their May edition. One of our Year Six Art’s Team members, Alfie, had their artwork featured in the article. “I am pretty happy about my artwork being on display. I was pretty freaked out when I realised that everyone in Glen Eira could see my artwork (but in a good way)”, is what Alfie had to say about being the featured artist in the article. Follow the link provided to access the article (page 12) and make sure to check out our student’s display when driving past Ormond Uniting Church.

Easter Egg Extravaganza in Visual Arts:

On the last Monday lunchtime of Term 1 the Year Six Visual Arts Action Team hosted an Easter Craft activity in the Visual Arts room. Many of the students from Year one joined us and participated in an Easter Egg craft activity. They used multiple materials such as glitter, pipe cleaners, sequins, and styrofoam eggs to create an Easter Egg decoration. The lunchtime activity was a huge success with all of the Year One’s who joined us having an enjoyable afternoon. They enjoyed it so much that they asked us to hold another club in Term 2.

Running the club was a very good experience for all the future art teachers in our class. It was challenging organising the activity and creating the task but so much fun to be able to teach, work, and cooperate with all of the Year One’s.

Here are some of the thoughts from both the Year Six Arts team and the Year Ones who participated in the easter egg activity:

“I liked it because we could try to do different things with the Easter eggs” Lucy. B 1L.

“I liked making the eggs because we got to use lots of glitter!” Ariana. K 1L

“I liked everything about it because I got to hang out with the Grade 6’s” Kiaan. B 1A

“I loved seeing how the teachers feel when they have to teach the class” Mimi. X 6J

“It was fun. It gave me a feel of what my dream career could be” Alfie. B 6J

Meet out Visual Arts Captain- Isaac:

Hi! I am Isaac, your Visual Arts captain this year. I am proud and grateful to be wearing the Visual Arts Captain badge as it allows me to take on a lot more responsibilities and jobs. I saw the Arts Team as a great opportunity to work together with new people and to make cool projects with them. I have loved Visual Arts since Prep. I have always looked forward to anything Visual Arts related, from sculptures, dioramas or painting. Every time I start a project, I like to make mine original, creative and different. My favourite type of art is sketching because it is simple, and you don’t need many materials. I am also fond of other types of arts such as music. I play an instrument, the piano, at Grade Five level and my favourite song is ‘For Elise’ by Beethoven. Recently, in Performing Arts, I played the Boy, a role in my class’s Jabberwocky performance at assembly. Finally, as much as I love art, I also love sports.

Thank you for reading.

Murrumbeena Primary School - ‘Shrek Jr’ and ‘Once upon a time in Murrumbeena’:

Excitement is abuzz around the school with our official ‘Shrek Jr’ and ‘Once upon a time in Murrumbeena’ posters going up on display! Keep your eyes peeled for these posters!

Large boxes needed for production:

The prop making team are in need of extra-large boxes for sets for our production. If MPS families have any large boxes (e.g., refrigerator, washing machine, etc) and could pass them along to Ms Marquis or Ms Nugent that would be greatly appreciated.

Year Six explores the weird and wacky world of Tim Burton:

You may be wondering, who are those freaky, wild looking people on the walls in the school building? Our Year 6 students!

Year 6 students delved into the world of Tim Burton and his iconic artistic style in Term 1 in Visual Arts. They investigated the features common to Tim Burton characters and explored some of his famous films including ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, ‘Coraline’ and ‘The Corpse Bride’. They then created their own Tim Burton inspired self-portraits using charcoal sticks. Every single self-portrait created by our students looks unique and wacky. If you happen to be creeping through our hallways make sure to check them out! They look just like they could make an appearance as a character in a Tim Burton film.

Here’s what some of our Year 6 students enjoyed about the project:

“They were really fun to do. I really liked doing the shading and the style because it looked cool” Kaela. B (6K)

“I liked the topic because Tim Burton is a really good producer and I have seen all of his films. It was cool to draw in his art style” Charlotte. L (6J).

“Ms Marquis would dress up as Wednesday Addams on the days we did our Tim Burton self-portraits” Chamath (6K)

“There’s a dragon in the art room!”:

“There’s a dragon in the art room!” is the word around Murrumbeena Primary School at the moment. There have been curious peeks into the art room the last few weeks from both parents and students who are all trying to catch a glimpse of this mysterious dragon. But what is this dragon?!Well, ‘Shrek Jr’ features a huge, giant dragon in it. Ms Marquis, Ms Nugent and the amazing Year 6 Arts Team students have been busy building a dragon puppet that will feature on stage later this year at our school production. It is still in the early stages of construction but below is a sneak peak of the glorious beast. Some of our Year 6 Arts Team students have been working on the dragon during their Action Time on Friday’s. “It was very interesting, and you had to be very precise when putting on the different parts of the dragon,” said Luka. K (6J).Here are what some of our younger students have to say about sharing their art lessons and art room with the dragon: “The dragon looks really creepy and big!,” Olivia. Q and Amelia. M (1P)“It is magnificent in every way”, Vedant. A (4W)“It is impressive and cool," Adriana. P (4W)“When I first walked in and saw the dragon my eyes were blown wide open!” Connor. M (4W)
