Year 12 Biology Students Visit Melbourne University

On Thursday, 21st of July, Unit 4 Biology students went on an excursion to Melbourne University. They had an opportunity to explore the university campus during Orientation week, taking in the sights, sounds, and vibe of a fresh semester at one of the most prestigious universities in Victoria.

Students then went and explored the Bioscience museum and undertook two practical investigations in the laboratories. The first was on the evolution of vinegar flies, which had students putting flies to "sleep" to examine how the environment affected the passage of specific genes through 15 generations. In the second investigation, students used ELISA to examine the presence of antibodies in a series of patients with varying levels of immunity to influenza.

Both practical investigations enhanced student understanding of core concepts in the VCE Biology course.
