Operation of CCTV Cameras at Girton

Notice to the school community

Prompted by trespassing and vandalism to school property and Senior School buildings that occurred during the recent school holiday, the school has decided to install CCTV cameras in the coming months to monitor external activity on the Senior School and Junior School boundary perimeters and some internal courtyard spaces in the Senior School.

The school has consulted with local police and been advised that installing security cameras is prudent and in keeping with normal school operations to support the safety of students and staff as well as property protection.

The cameras will record footage around the immediate Senior School and Junior School boundaries and the courtyard spaces easily accessed from outside the Senior School. There will also be some cameras placed in targeted internal areas of the Senior School to deter improper behaviour. Camera surveillance will not be monitored in “real time” but will be recorded for review if required. Signage will indicate the location of the cameras and will inform any passers-by that surveillance is taking place.

The proposed surveillance does not contravene Privacy legislation, and surveillance information will be destroyed or erased unless required for a specific investigation. Surveillance information will be referred to the police for criminal or serious matters.

Any concerns that members of the Girton school community may have about the installation of the proposed CCTV cameras and their operation outside of school hours should be raised directly with the Acting Head via email: head@girton.vic.edu.au
