Grade 5/6

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

We are learning all things Animal Adaptations. Our excursion last week kick started our unit and we are deep in developing our knowledge and understanding of animals. Students are researching an animal, using scientific language and topic specific language (eg. evolution, genetic mutation, structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations, organisms etc.) to develop a research project and match it with a diorama of their animals biome.

There is a buzz around the year level as they are finding out fun facts and information about their animal and extending their literacy, numeracy and inquiry skills whilst they make their way through the unit. In literacy, we are using the skimming and scanning reading strategy to help us to find the important facts that we need. Students are developing their informative writing skills and using mathematical skills in mapping where their chosen animal is from.

There is so much range and creativity in this unit and the students will be developing a diorama in week 4. If any families have any spare boxes (shoe boxes/slightly bigger) that they wish to donate to the Grade 5/6s so we can create this, that would be muchly appreciated.

CAMP

It is getting close to Camp time! We are super excited and busy planning everything. We are encouraging the students to use the upcoming Curriculum Day to start to pack for camp. This is to ensure they have everything but we would love for the students to have the responsibility of packing so they know where everything is. This can also help reduce some of the anxiety leading to camp. We understand that students are unsure about what to expect and we are having open conversations and getting them to ask as many questions prior to going to support them for what will be a fun and amazing experience.

A reminder to please return all forms ASAP to the classroom teacher.
