Science News

What an exciting time for Year 10. They have been busy deciding what courses they need to study so that they prepare themselves for their careers after they leave Marian. Currently they are studying the physics unit on motion and following that, they will have a clear understanding of the study of chemistry. We look forward to supporting them through the next two years of senior study if they should choose science.

The Year 9 have been engaged with their persuasive text, arguing their point with some excellent proof of scientific ideas and data from Nasa and other reputable sources. They are studying the mysterious universe and so Nasa provides excellent evidence and current thinking about what is out there beyond the stars. This is an assessment as learning, so students are being taught persuasive writing techniques and supported throughout the journey of presenting their arguments.

Year 8 have been busy looking at human body systems and either loving or hating their experiences as they dissect the lungs, heart and kidney in this unit of work. We have a lovely jigsaw on the body systems that students can work on within a group, next week. Should be fun and also challenging.

Year 7 received their assessment as learning on writing a narrative. They have 5 scenarios and will choose one to write a scientific narrative showing their creative flair and their understanding of the worlds that they can not see but that are part of their world. They will have guidance and support as they refine their stories and show their understanding of the science. Once we have some great narratives and persuasive texts from year 9, we will share some student work with you if they agree.

Year 12 have finally finished their trials and teachers are marking at the moment. These results will give a clear indication regarding the amount of work to be done as the students prepare for their HSC exams. Students commented on being so tired after concentrating continuously for a long period of time. Brain work is tiring, so I hope they enjoy a little bit of downtime before getting back into it for the last run.

Welcome back to Mrs McIntosh, who has been away from the lab for a week with Covid-19, so we are all so happy to have her back to assist with the practicals.
