Planning Week Term 1
You may hear your child/children talking about planning day at school in the last two weeks of the term. Planning day is a full day, where all of the teachers across a year level, come together to prepare and plan the teaching and learning that will occur in the next term. Our weekly specialist timetable is modified over this week so that all specialist classes are conducted on the same day, allowing teachers to spend the day collaboratively preparing curriculum documentation, lesson plans and learning resources, booking incursions, excursions and camps and preparing communication documents.
Ways to Continue Learning in the School Holidays
The school holidays are a time for rest and relation, family time and celebrations, but learning does not have to stop. Learning occurs continually for both children and adults and there are great ways you can foster a love of learning when the school gate is closed.
I have included some examples below:
- Make reading a routine to look forward to. Reading can aid relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.
- Encourage imaginative play to express creativity - build tents, play with toys, build a fairy garden, make an obstacle course.
- Talk about current events with age appropriate discussion. Encouraging children to be aware of issues in the world helps develop critical thinking skills, problems solving and empathy.
- Take them to the supermarket! Discuss the cost of items, money and payment and where supermarket items actually come from.
- Cook together and follow recipes with steps and instructions.
- Find craft activities to do together - knitting, scrapbooking, card making, sewing, paper mâché, paper craft, play doh, stickers, origami, needlecraft, painting, stamping, wood craft, macrame and jewel craft.
Other great school holiday ideas:
- Explore nature and gardens - Royal Botanical Gardens, Dandenong Ranges National Park, Fitzroy Gardens, Sherbrooke Forest, Yarra River, Carlton Gardens, King's Domain Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens and so many more.
- Visit one of Melbourne's amazing zoological parks - Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary.
- Visit one of Melbourne's museums - Melbourne Museum, Australian Sports Museum, Museum of Chinese Australia History, Immigration Museum, Grainger Museum, Hellenic Museum, Ian Potter Museum and so many more.
- Visit one of Melbourne's galleries - National Gallery of Victoria, ACMI, The Johnston Collection, Heide Museum of Modern Art, RMIT Gallery and so many more.
- Visit iconic Melbourne sites including the State Library, Federation Square, Melbourne Skydeck, MCG, Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, Shrine of Remembrance, Hosier Lane, Old Melbourne Goal, Puffing Billy Railway, Scienceworks, St Kilda Pier, Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes, Cook's Cottage, Albert Park Lake, Parliament House, Mount Dandenong and so many more.
- Visit markets including the Queen Victoria Market, Preston Market and the South Melbourne Market.
- Visit the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, A Maze N Things and the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory.
Wishing everyone a fabulous holiday break. Looking forward to seeing you all in Term 2.
