Mask Recycling & Nude Food Fridays
Did you know?
Disposable masks are made of a type of plastic that can contribute to water pollution and harm sea life? The good news is that they can now be recycled and turned into roads!
Did you know?
A 1km stretch of a two-lane road would use approximately three million recycled masks and divert 93 tonnes of waste from landfill!
At FPS, we have a new recycling initiative!
We can now recycle disposable face masks. Look for the boxes about the school for your disposable mask – both surgical and the N95 masks are accepted.
Why are we interested in recycling masks?
The premise for this initiative is that there was a nearly 9,000 per cent jump in global face mask litter last year. Disposable face masks can take hundreds of years to break down and threaten to entangle wildlife, litter our beaches, block sewers, and pollute the food chain. Masks can be upcycled into different useful products such as roads! We want to educate our community about mask pollution AND actively reduce it.
Look for the mask recycling bins about the school!
Nude Food Fridays are coming to FPS in term two! Beginning in week one staff and students are encouraged to have a nude food lunch box for the day. We have noticed more and more food wrappers creeping into the yard and we want to do our part in preventing this.
Nude Food essentially means that all plastic is kept at home and our lunch boxes only have food that won’t create litter. Here are some examples.
The Eco Club have been working hard to advertise this new initiative. Members created colourful and informative posters and then a vote was conducted. Billy M (4C) and Anna A (4B) won the competition, look at their posters below and look out for all of the other posters around the school soon.
Let’s work together to prevent waste!
