Marine Sanctuary – Portsea Excursion (BEST)

Year 9 & 10

On Friday 24 March, the Year 9 & 10 Marine Sanctuary class visited Portsea for the last of their Term 1 snorkelling excursions.  Students participated in a boat dive at Portsea where we visited an offshore reef at Popes Eye. This artificial reef allowed us to spot a wide variety fish species and was a great comparison to our snorkelling sessions at Ricketts Point. On the return trip we had the chance to stop the boat and swim with the seals.  After a short break back on land, students were back in the water for a shore dive at a sheltered snorkel site at Portsea, where we were able to see weedy sea dragons and stingrays. Student reflection and photos below.

The marine squad ventured to Portsea for a day on the 25th of March. We started the adventure on the 'Red Boat' in which we got to see Ben drive throughout the trip. We snorkelled at Popes Eye practicing our duck diving skills. There, we saw lots of different types of fish and birds. Afterwards we enjoyed a snorkel with the seals. Even though we were fighting against the current it was a great experience and amazing to see the seals. Ben even touched a seal!!! We enjoyed a lunch together and made lots of memories we will never forget.
