Queen Victoria Market

Last week our VCE Economics learning team headed into the city to begin a case study on the Queen Victoria Market. They worked in groups of three to explore the nature of the market, how buyers and sellers interact with one another, and the degree of competition.

Students are required to write a 1000 word economic report drawing upon the evidence they collected at the market, including:

  • Survey responses from customers about their shopping preferences and habits, as well as the factors that influence their demand for certain products
  • Feedback from stall operators about running a business at the Queen Vic Market, setting prices and differentiating themselves from their competitors
  • The price levels for certain products at the market and how they compare to the prices at a local supermarket
  • Photos and video footage of the market in action, focusing on the goods and services being offered and the interactions between market participants.

Students also enjoyed some of the local produce and cuisine, as can be seen in at least one of the following photos (thanks to the iconic hot jam doughnut van)!
