Year Five News

Written by the Year Five Team

Dear Year Five Families,

Welcome back for Term Two!

The Year Five team would like to congratulate students on their efforts in a smooth start to Term Two. Students displayed principled and reflective attitudes upon beginning the term.

The students hard work and perseverance to NAPLAN preparation is commended.  NAPLAN will begin next week on May 10th. Please see the 'Important Dates' section for more information.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, students began the second Unit of Inquiry for the year with the Transdisciplinary Theme being 'Sharing the Planet' and the Central Idea 'Access to opportunities affects equality for all'. Students conducted provocations using the following visible thinking routines - 'See, Think, Wonder', 'Chalk Talk', 'What makes you say that?', and 'Question Starts'. These encourage students to think openly with no boundaries. Students also began to unpack the central idea, looking for key words and understandings.

Reading

As NAPLAN fastly approaches, students have been successfully working on their comprehension skills and strategies to enhance their understanding in Reading. This week, students have been going through various NAPLAN Reading questions and texts in order to grasp a better understanding of how questions are worded and understanding what is asked of them.

Writing

Our focus for writing is narratives. Students have been working on the 'Seven Steps to Success' approach which allows them to 'Ban the Boring' from their stories to make them more lively, fun and engaging for their audience. Students have learnt a range of figurative language in class to support them such as similes and metaphors.

In preparation for Language Conventions, students revisited simple and compound sentences. They have then extended their knowledge to complex sentences, learning about subordinating conjunctions,  (but, and,  so, for).

Maths

In Maths, students are focusing on a variety of NAPLAN questions in preparation for next week. Students have been asked to highlight key information and justify their responses through reflections on why they have chosen a particular approach. This allows them to think about their learning and how they learn.
