Year Three News

Welcome back to Term Two!

On behalf of the Year Three team, we hope all students and families have had a restful break. All students should be immensely proud of their transition back to school.  The Year Threes have settled in quickly and been principled in their approach as we begin another busy term. As the NAPLAN dates fast approach us, we would like to acknowledge the perseverance and dedication displayed by students. This week, students commemorated ANZAC day with the school hosting a special assembly. A minute of silence was observed to remember and pay respect to those who were a part of the events. During our assembly, students participated in singing the New Zealand and Australian national anthem and laying wreaths.

Unit of Inquiry

In Year Three, we have started our new Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Where we are in Place and Time’ with the Central Idea ‘Technological changes over time have impacted our world’. Our provocation day involved students travelling to the 'Time Traveller Museum’ kindly hosted in Mr Peterson’s classroom. It was wonderful to see students being inquirers and beginning to think of their wonderings for our new unit. A typewriter, record player and old phones were just some of the devices on display at the museum.

Reading

As we fast approach NAPLAN week, students have been hard at work practising their summarising skills and answering NAPLAN style questions during reading lessons. Students have been understanding how to identify the main idea of a text and using their own words they have been able to retell the events that took place in the text. As a part of our warmup activities at the start of the lesson, students have been completing language convention questions.

Writing

In Writing this week, students have begun work on narrative texts. Students have been able to identify the various features of a narrative text. We have begun unpacking characters, settings, problem and solution. The cohort have demonstrated their creativity and used their vivid imaginations to create these elements for their own narrative piece. As creative writers, students used sizzling starts such as onomatopoeia, dialogue and setting to hook and engage their readers. Over the next few weeks, we will continue refining these skills and revise over persuasive texts in time for the Writing NAPLAN.

Maths

In Maths, students have been working on revising their knowledge of whole number by working through concepts relating to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We spent time this week using our knowledge of RUCSAC to solve worded story problems relating to the four operations. This has proved to be a great refresher for students after coming back from the holidays. We continue to work in our Maths fluid groups to ensure students work to target their individual point of need.

The start of a new term brings about an opportunity for students to engage in our various areas of learning, here at Saltwater College. Last term, students had great fun in Drama and with the start of this term, students will be involved in dance lessons with Mr H. Students have been showing excitement and enthusiasm as they look forward to the term ahead.

Reminders:

We kindly request that all families ensure they return the Unit of Inquiry incursion forms before the due date Wednesday the 18th of May.

Kind Regards,

The Year Three teaching team.
