Year Two News

Hello Year Two Parents,
Welcome back to Term Two. We hope everyone has had a nice and enjoyable holiday and are feeling relaxed and ready to go. The Year Two team are so excited to see everyone again. We are so proud of all the hard work that was achieved in Term One. We can see the great friendships that have developed in classes and students have become comfortable in their learning environments. We are looking forward to seeing more progress this term.
Reading
In Reading this term we are beginning to focus on non-fiction texts and information reports. We have been learning to identify the different features between fiction and non-fiction texts including, facts, glossaries and index pages. We have been utilising EPIC to explore different non-fiction texts that have been linked to our new Unit of Inquiry. This week we have been learning how to use a glossary and index and why they are important in non-fiction texts. Students have also recommenced their guided reading sessions following the holiday break and we are looking forward to even more growth in our reading this term!
Writing
In Writing we are looking at information reports. We have brainstormed different topics in our Writer’s notebooks that we are experts on and will be creating our own information reports on our chosen topic. This week we focussed on creating topic sentences for our writing to describe the purpose of our information report. We are looking forward to publishing our completed information reports. We also wrote recounts about our school holidays, working on including paragraphs into our writing.
Maths
In Maths we are looking at using multiple strategies to solve open ended maths problems. We are also putting a focus on addition and exploring different addition strategies that we can use including number lines and vertical addition. Students are also beginning to focus on location and probability. This week we have explored using directional language to guide teddy bear counters through a map.
Inquiry
In Inquiry we have just had our provocation day for our new Unit of Inquiry ‘How the World Works’. The students rotated through multiple activities that exposed them to different natural disasters. Some of these activities included creating our own cyclones out of water and blue food dye, creating houses to withstand earthquakes and looking at how floods can destroy homes. We are very excited about our upcoming excursion to the IMAX museum!
Reminders:
- Just a reminder in Term Two and Three the children are to wear winter uniform. Hats no longer need to be worn. Please check the lost property areas for any items of clothing that have gone missing this term. If your child’s clothing is labelled, then it is returned to your child’s classroom when found.
- Please remember that students need to come to school each day with their iPad fully charged.
We want to wish the Year Two students an enjoyable and safe Term Two filled with lots of learning.
From the Year Two Teachers.
