Physical Education

In Our Classroom

Welcome back to P.E for term two.

During the first two weeks of term two students have been settling back into school and have begun learning new and exciting skills in PE.

Over these past 2 weeks our Preps have begun learning about throwing and catching using various sized balls. Our prep students have continued to learn about the expectations in PE as well as some exciting new activities such as “the magic shoe box’, ‘tail tag’ and ‘fruit salad’.

Our grade one, two, three and four students have begun learning dribbling skills we use in basketball. Some of the activities we have covered in these sessions have been dribbling on the spot, dribbling up and down the gym, shielding the ball whilst dribbling, as well as a ‘cross over’ dribble. Students have been also been learning new warm up games such as ‘rob the nest’ and foxes and rabbits’.

Over the last two weeks our grade six students have begun exploring the various rules and skills associated with basketball such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defending. Students will be working on these skills throughout the term with a view to them organising and running their own basketball tournament at the end of the term. Our students have been doing a great job learning about the importance of sportsmanship and displaying that within our lessons.

A Reflection on the Victorian Primary school Tennis divisional and Regional Tennis tournament.

"I first of all would like to thank all PE teachers for giving me the chance to compete at divisional and regional tennis representing my school. It was a great competition and new learning.

I started off at divisional with a tough loss, but I was able to bounce back and get a win. My winning progressed through the next matches as my confidence grew. In the end I had won 4/5 matches and came second meaning I qualified for the regional.

At regionals it was a hot and humid day as there were many people competing hoping to get into state finals. I started off well with two back to back wins 4-2 and 4-1. In my last round robin match, I had enjoyed a tough match but a great competition in general, I ended up losing but came 1st in the group overall .

Next, in my semi-final match I didn't have my rhythm or flow. It was soon 3 - 1 his way. I was then mentally able to do better and got it to a tie - breaker. I was leading 6-2 in the breaker with multiple match points but I wasn't able to convert any of them and ended up losing 8-6 in the breaker. After the match I was furious but I slowly 🐌 calmed down and eventually turned out to be a great learning point for me in this wonderful game."

Congratulations Aarush on your fantastic results, we hope to see you compete next year. Well done from all the PE Teachers.

Five and Six Athletics Day

On Tuesday 5 April we held the fourth Saltwater Athletics Carnival for students in years five, six and seven at Victoria University Sporting Complex, Athletic Track in Werribee. We would like to congratulate all students that participated. All the teachers were impressed by the students’ risk taking, persistence and supporting each other throughout the day. All students participated in six events; 100 metre, 200 metre, hurdles, long jump, high jump, and triple jump. There was also an optional 800-metre race for students. Our students made the school very proud with their effort, participation, and behaviour. Over the coming month the PE Teachers will be selecting student from their results to be selected for the Saltwater College Athletics team.

Cross Country

On Thursday 28 April, 34 students participated in the Point Cook District Cross Country at Saltwater Reserve. The PE teachers were very proud of the students who displayed persistence and reliance, and it was fantastic to see our senior students supporting and encouraging the grade three and four students. 12 students finished in the top 10 of their age group and will now represent Saltwater at the Regional Cross Country day on 1st June  at Werribee. A special mention to Branson Botha who came 1st and Harri Leon who came 3rd in their events. Both students were also announced the captains of the team in special presentation last week.

A reflection from our cross country Captains

Harri Leon and Branson Botha

Last Thursday, 34 students form Saltwater competed against students from seven other schools form the Point Cook area. Everyone was supportive and encouraging with each other and they showed great sportsmanship.

The people that made it into the cross country team had to practice every Friday with Mr Symmons. We had to run twelve laps around the oval which is 3kms and the younger students had to run 8 laps which was 2kms.

It was very nerve wracking as we walked over to the cross country event because only the top 10 competitors make it to the next stage. The 11,12 and 3 boys and girls had to run 3kms which is three laps around 2 AFL ovals and the 9 and 10 boys and girls had to run two laps around the AFL fields.

While we at the cross country event everyone was very competitive from the start of the race to the finish. It was really fun representing our school and running against the other schools. At the end of the events our school claimed two medals, one gold and one bronze, but we are very proud of everyone who participated in the events this year, and a shout out to all the students made it to the next round.

And a huge shout to Miss Evans for supporting us through all that has happened and Mr Symmons for running Friday practice, he really pushed our ability to run.

Gala Sports Day

All students who competed did an amazing job representing the school. The team work and the sense of comradery amongst all teams was nothing short of outstanding.

All teams did an amazing job competing, for a lot of students this was there first time competing in their chosen sports, seeing the progression of the students and the team on the day was a real highlight.

A special mention goes out to the boys’ basketball team who won two out of their three games and narrowly missed out on a place in the finals.
