Visual Arts

with Ms. Nardo, Ms. Mancini and Ms.Nishani

What a tremendous start to the Visual Art program we have had in this first week of Term 2.

Our junior school students have come back eager and ready to create some fabulous artwork. As our school holidays ran up to and included ANZAC day; our first week’s activity focused on creating a piece that paid tribute to those who have fallen in past and present wars, ensuring us with the safety and freedom we all enjoy in this great nation.

We began each of our lessons across Foundation to Year 3 with some discussion on what ANZAC day means and why we celebrate this Special day. We watched a short story called ‘The Poppy Story’ and saw how this humble flower came to symbolise our ANZAC heroes. The year 3 students watched a story called  'My Grandad marches on ANZAC Day.'

Students in our Foundation classes created a collaborative piece where each student drew and shaded a part of a poppy. When each students completed their part, we placed the pieces together to create one whole flower! An example is shown right.

In years One and Two, students  continued with the    ANZAC theme and produced some wonderful collages. Students cut out red pieces of paper which were then arranged and pasted onto a green background. Once all the students completed their artwork, they were placed next to each other to simulate ‘Flanders Fields’ where the poppies grew.

Year Three students produced some outstanding portraits of our ANZAC heroes. Students were given A4 newspaper backgrounds, black green and brown oil pastels to create these amazing portraits of our ANZAC heroes. It was lovely to see students paying tribute to both men and women ANZAC's

Year Four  to Six

Visual Arts

Year Four

Students in Year Four have almost completed the Mandala unit in Art. They have spent the last two weeks completing their Art reflections and creating the sand Mandalas inspired by Buddhist Monks. In creating their sand Mandalas, they are reminded about the cycle of life and the impermanence of situations that occur in life. The Sand Mandala is comprised of the lotus flower which represents the strength and beauty of a flower that can grow, flourish and blossom despite its bleak environment and muddy waters. Students were encouraged to think about all the people who have undergone adversities in their lives and  how they have become resilient, open minded, flexible and reflective as a result. Likewise, students began to consider their own lives, times during the pandemic and how they have become resilient and blossomed into their own lotus flowers.

Year Five

Students in Year 5 have spent the last week inquiring into ANZAC day and making poppy wreaths for the fallen soldiers in Gallipoli. They have viewed various videos and stories about ANZAC day and have created wreaths to commemorate and respect the veterans who fought in the ANZAC war to keep Australia safe. Students have also reflected on countries that they and their classmates have come from and whilst some still are unsettled and finding peace, they are very grateful to be now living here in Australia. A place where everyone can call home.

Year Six

Students in Year six have completed their finishing touches to their Year of the tiger projects by adding contour lines and textures using oil pastels. They have also used various types of Typography fonts to show contrast in the design and print of their affirmations and growth mindset statements so that when they place their tigers in their bedrooms, they will wake up every morning with positive influences. Students also completed in depth artist statements and reflections on the processes undergone during their project and reflected on the psychology behind their choice of colours, textures and patterns.
