Community Engagement in Learning

In coming to Epping Secondary College at the beginning of 2022 it has been a wonderful experience getting to know staff, students, families and the local community. Over the course of this term there have been several teams and areas within the school that I have been working closely with which have, to date, resulted in:

  • Further enhancement of the school’s already very strong careers program, leading to even more opportunities in 2023 for students to discover post-secondary learning opportunities across Year 7 to 10, allowing for informed pathways and subject choices for the senior secondary years;
  • Compulsory Work Experience for Year 10 students, commencing this year. This week will occur from September 12 to 16, with more information to follow in upcoming newsletters;
  • Meeting the school’s student leaders. It has been a privilege to get to know such enthusiastic and dedicated leaders as they map out a variety of opportunities for all students to celebrate being part of the Epping Secondary community and help the greater community. I have worked with Jarneaka, our Culture & Diversity Leader to ensure all staff across the school convey an accurate Welcome to Country at meetings and official functions. All leaders are working on opportunities for students to celebrate returning to learning on the school premises, as opposed to remote learning, and ways for our Year 12 to celebrate their final year at Epping;
  • Getting to know our VCAL & VCE students and staff as the school prepares for changes across Years 11 & 12 in 2023. To be phased in next year, students will undertake a VCE, VCE with a Vocational Major or the Victorian Pathways Certificate. There will be more information regarding this as the year progresses, through the school’s newsletter and through subject information evenings;
  • Meeting and sourcing local businesses in support of our local community that provide our school with a variety of goods and services;
  • Sourcing and meeting other educational institutions and support services in identifying the best opportunities for our students whilst at Epping Secondary and beyond their time with us.

I look forward to continuing this work at Epping Secondary, as I continue to meet members of our school community.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable break.
