Autumn Holiday Program
o Discover the art of ceramics (with Skye)
Ever wanted to design and make your own dinner set, or perhaps your own designer jewellery? Maybe you wish to create your own fantastical creature from clay? In this activity you will learn a range of techniques for making ceramics.
o Bake Harry Potter treats (with Eliana)
Cook (and more importantly eat) the food that we muggles have only read about: the Leaky Cauldron's famous butterbeer, pumpkin pasties from the Hogwarts Express and the slightly squashed but nonetheless delicious chocolate cake that Hagrid made for Harry's 11th birthday. Start off with a reading of food-related Potter passages and finish with a feast worthy of The Great Hall!
o Learn Japanese Shibori techniques (with Margaret)
Over two workshops, young designers will discover the beauty of traditional Japanese Shibori textiles. We will explore five traditional resist dyeing techniques: pole wrapping, stitching, clamping, folding and tie-dyeing, after which we will dye our own clothes and see how they hold the memory of the techniques we explored. Young designers will create a sarong to wear, or something sculptural.
o Kerbal Space Program (with Adam)
Kerbal is a game designed to allow the player to experience the physics and complexities as well as the excitement and elation of building a rocket and piloting it into space. In this activity, Adam covers a basic understanding of the physics terminology and concepts, the mechanical concepts of engineering a spacecraft, game interfaces, ladder logic programming, long range navigation, aerodynamics, explosions and space! No experience necessary.
o Programme a traffic light in Arduino (with Karl)
Design, build and understand how a traffic signal works using Arduino, an open-source micro-controller we can programme using a Mac, PC or Linux computer. The course is designed to provide an easy entry into understanding technology, programming in C, basic electronic theory and practices. It’s a great beginner project which needs no experience, just a willingness to solder, programme code and have fun with electronics.
o Fun programming games (with Bronte & Karl)
Adventures in coding without a computer, inspired by the Linda Liukas book ‘Hello Ruby’. Children will have fun learning Algorithms, Booleans, Strings, Numbers, Loops and Sequences.
Suitable for girls and boys from Grades 3 to 7
Fully supervised
Cost: $70 per day
